World Without End: July 2015
http://world-without-end.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
On Sunday at Kilmallie Free Church we looked at prayer from both the Old and New Testaments. In the morning, we looked at the astonishing promises of Jesus in Matthew 7:7-8:. Ask, and you will receive; Seek, and you will find; Knock, and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and for the one who knocks, it will be opened. Coupling this with what Jesus says in Matthew 6:5-8, we thought about Everyday Prayer based in the Generosity of God. That is, they are.

The Kingdom of God and New Creation. Here’s a good quote from George Eldon Ladd on the Kingdom of God and new creation, from the last pages of his. Theology of the New Testament. Man’s ultimate destiny is an earthly one. Man is a creature, and God created the earth to be the scene of his creaturely existence. Therefore, even as the redemption of man in the bodily aspect of his being demands the resurrection of the body, so the redemption of the very physical creation requires a. G E Ladd,. That is fallen...

World Without End: The New World and the Old

The New World and the Old. Over the past few months, from time to time, I’ve been using the phrase ‘Living Between Two Worlds’ to highlight and to teach the distinctively Reformed view that the world in which we live is. Subject of God’s renewal. In new creation. We live in a fallen world, yes, but it is God’s. Paul and the Faithfulness of God. On Paul for gems for my thesis at the moment. Here’s a couple of quotes on The New World and the Old that I needed to share…. For Paul, the renewal of the existing.

Professor John Lennox was speaking at Kilmallie Free Church last Sunday. During his morning address, he spoke briefly about the importance of stories for forming our identity. To illustrate his point he used the example of people who suddenly begin to suffer from amnesia (perhaps due to a head injury). For the amnesiac, forgetting the past means uncertainty of who they are. Professor Lennox put it this way:. Posted by David Kirk. Labels: Conversion of the Imagination. World Without End: September 2014

The Realities of Suffering, Hope and Love. On Wednesday, it was World Suicide Prevention Day. For the last 11 years, 10th September has been a day for awareness-raising about suicide and about prevention programmes and techniques. So, at the prayer meeting on Wednesday, I brought some meditations from the Bible on psychological suffering. The Church speaks an answer to suffering and despair. Yet, this is not the only way in which we encounter the presence of Christ. The Gospel of Hope and Love is not...

Stott on Living as the New Humanity. At last Sunday evening’s service, and again on Wednesday night, I quoted John Stott on Living as the New Humanity. I promised to put the quote on the blog, so here it is. In the quote Stott uses the language of ‘new society’, but the meaning in the same – he also uses the language of ‘new humanity’ elsewhere. Anyway, here’s the quote…. We are God’s new society, a people who have put off the old life and put on the new; that is what he has made us. Posted by David Kirk.

And so, with my changing ministry, World Without End is changing. From the sporadic blog of a PhD researcher working from an ageing shed in the Outer Hebrides to the hopefully less sporadic blog of a minister in a new luxurious (by comparison) ‘shed’. I hope to use World Without End to continue my sporadic theological reflections, but also as a resource for the congregations in Caol and Acharacle. There’ll be a time of transition, and we’ll see how it goes…. Posted by David Kirk. Our prayer for these com...

World Without End: Non-religious Christianity
http://world-without-end.blogspot.com/2015/01/non-religious-christianity.html
Several days ago, I read one of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s letters written from Tegel Prison, Berlin. The whole letter is striking to read, and it contains the following, which I’ve been returning to and turning over in my mind ever since. Is there any concern in the Old Testament about saving one's soul at all? Letters to a Friend, May 5th 1944 (emphasis original). Or to the man of today. World If we can understand and proclaim that then, as Bonhoeffer writes in his letter of April 30th 1944, ‘Christ i...

World Without End: The Decline of Christianity in Scotland (and Wales)
http://world-without-end.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-decline-of-christianity-in-scotland.html
The Decline of Christianity in Scotland (and Wales). By Andy Hunter (Scotland Director of FIEC) in July’s. Seeks to explain the ‘spectacular spiritual decline’ in Scotland. The piece (an expanded piece. Other reasons seem more tenuous, particularly Hunter’s quite striking claim that a greater proportion of Independent churches in England has slowed decline south of the Border. The incredibly striking and sobering statistic is the rise in those declaring no religious affiliation between 1963 and 2015 (3&#...
