It was “quite an experience”, as La Trobe University emeritus professor Robert Manne commented to the big audience in Bendigo’s Ulumbarra Theatre, following his interview with Julian Assange. It wasn’t an easy interview: not only was it technically fraught, as we were never sure if the link would be interrupted, but it was also difficult to know how Assange would react to questioning. A writing portal for Central Victoria. Vox Bendigo Fyffe Prize. Vox Bendigo Fyffe Prize. Doherty – Truth and Nutters. It’s a cold room, heaters attempt to bring warmth, only reaching the few nearest. Wooden folding patio chairs are squeezed together closer than economy airline seats. The roof is mouldy, behind the black stage curtains the walls decay. Warmth is brought by the audience. Not just by collective bodies, but by the atmosphere they produce. Summing up a festival – student style. 8220;I would l...

Write in pencil only. And in other news …. The nights have been even colder since then, and Paquita’s wool is thick and warm, even when there’s ice on her back on a frosty morning. Slowly, slowly, she’s learning to trust us (even if her mum doesn’t) and she comes to gives us a kiss on the nose when we visit. New life, young life it is such a sense of hope. In these days, when I feel like I don’t have the resilience to listen to another news report, I hang onto that kind of hope. July 9, 2015 at 8:10 pm.

Write in pencil only. Newer posts →. Squinting from the past. That tantalising, partial view says so much: this far you may look and no more; this narrow view is all that is permitted. It is almost more powerful a signal of the dangers of sight than if the anchoress were given no view at all. Another squint, of the same design, at St James, Shere, shows the design more clearly. The quatrefoil on the left would allow enough space for the anchoress to receive the bread at Mass. The photo on the left shows ...
