Cari-d Away: January 2011
http://cari-daway.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 18, 2011. Cari-d Away to Callaway. Every other year or so in December, we bundle ourselves up in multiple layers of our warmest woolies and drive up to Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia. For some winter wonderland fun at their Fantasy in Lights event. Inside this glassed-in structure are literally thousands of butterflies - over 2700 the day we were there, according to the Butterfly Count board. There are butterflies hatching in a display, and then once you walk into the hum...

Cari-d Away: December 2010
http://cari-daway.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 7, 2010. Long Overdue Hydroponic Garden Update. Before, the squirrels (and probably fruit rats, but we try not to think about that) had free access to all of our garden goodies. Now, the entire set of 10 towers has been enclosed in chicken wire, including the top. This has had a profound (and not unexpected) effect on our productivity. Duh. We still have issues with squash getting powdery mildew. Squash doesn't do so well in high humidity, I guess. I'm pleased with the strawberries, des...

Cari-d Away: Kefir Madness
http://cari-daway.blogspot.com/2012/01/kefir-madness.html
Saturday, January 28, 2012. Long time no blog! I found out from my sister-in-law that you could make your own water kefir. This sounded like a great way to keep drinking kefir, reduce the dairy, and make it myself. I did some research and found a local company that sells kefir grain starter kits. Erin, from Water Kefir Grains. I don't want to steal anyone's thunder and research that went into their kefir web pages, so my post is just going to be a little pictorial of my first batch. How I got Carid Away.

Cari-d Away: Achieving Chicken Integration
http://cari-daway.blogspot.com/2012/02/achieving-chicken-integration.html
Sunday, February 5, 2012. Then we had a cold snap, and all of a sudden there was an attitude shift. Pearl and Phyllis decided that three chickens were warmer than two, and stopped chasing Francine off when she tried to go to bed with them. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). How I got Carid Away. Chris and Kym's Wedding. 8230;and other matrimonial things. A legacy of flavor (or, the reason why the wedding menu is so important). January 19, 2013. We got the menu back, and it looks every bit as four star as we were hoping (and in fact, I’m expecting Kym will actually get on here and post about it, along with our experience at the florist. But somebody asked me why we’d gone so high end on the menu. Nothing less will do for a family with a legacy of amazing flavor. Check out Val’s Story. I'm a web d...

Friday, April 29, 2011. Lessons from Daylilies: 1. Bloom Where You Are Planted. It started innocently enough in March of 2006 when we bought 4 daylilies from BADS, the Bay Area Daylily Society. Shortly after that, we found that the Central Florida Hemerocallis Society was having a daylily sale at Leu Gardens. In Orlando. We came home with about 40 varieties. About a month after that, we drove up to Brooksville to Johnson's Daylily and Bamboo Farm. Jeff and "Lori Goldston". Watermill Gardens, 2007. Most o...

Cari-d Away: August 2010
http://cari-daway.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 25, 2010. Chicks, Chickens and Chickpeas. Chicks (like me) who try to eat healthfully and feed their chickens healthfully, can use chickpeas to do both. I eat chickpeas in a lot of ways - in salads, soups, hummus, falafel and my favorite way: roasted. The chickens really like chickpeas, too, only they take 'em straight from the can. Cool and store in an air-tight container. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). How I got Carid Away. V-Spicery - local spice shop. If you'd like ...

Cari-d Away: Moving: The Ultimate Test of Living Green
http://cari-daway.blogspot.com/2012/05/moving-ultimate-test-of-living-green.html
Sunday, May 20, 2012. Moving: The Ultimate Test of Living Green. February 2012 brought with us the culmination of "Five Year Plan." After completing both his Master's and Doctoral Degrees, as well as surviving both a thyroidectomy and a surgery to remove a massive pituitary tumor within 6 months of his defense, Jay was offered a faculty position at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. He starts work on my birthday in August. We'll be living in the Town of Jonesborough. I probably s...
