Between the constant rain, mud and dampness, we're a bit behind what we had planned out. It rained constantly. It rained here almost every day in May. Seriously. And of course the few dry days we had were days that I had to work. Unless I am looking for a weed harvest, this isn't quite what I was looking for. First flowers on our sugar snap plant. Carrot fronds that have FINALLY emerged.

28 June, 2011. Trout Lilies - one of the first flowers to emerge once the snow melted. I know they are weeds, but the bees and I still love them. It was especially beautiful to drive by fields covered in dandelions, almost glowing with their sunny, yellow flowers. With lots of snow melting and record amounts of spring rain, you get lots of waterfalls. This is in Smugglers Notch - not my property, but nearby. I finally planted my garden this spring! I’m thrilled about the technological advances made in my lifetime and am all for continuing to advance as society, but so many people have “forgotten” so many of the traditional skills we knew 100, even 50 years ago. Why should we learn how to can tomatoes when we can just buy a jar of sauce at the grocery store? Why should we learn to knit or sew, when we can go shopping at the local discount store and buy that scarf or pair of pants for cheap?

24 March, 2011. First steps in gardening. Over the last few weeks, we had a record-breaking March blizzard - 3 new feet of snow in under 24 hours. As I sat there watching our property being buried, again, I decided that if nature wasn’t going to cooperate, I could at least pretend. It was time to bring out the seed catalogs.
