This preliminary list is made by Petra Ballings using Pennington s Butterflies of Southern Africa. Many, many thanks to Mr. Alan Gardiner for additional records and comments. Records: P= Pennington, AG= Alan Gardiner. An exceedingly rare migrant, only one specimen from the lower Vumba and a couple from Mutare (AG). B safitza f. evenus. B ena f. kigonserae. B campinus campinus f. goetzei. Only one taken in 1931, probably blown in by the strong winds of that year (AG). H(A) vumbui f. cooksoni.

In the plant kingdom we find a major division of vascular, spore bearing plants, called the Pteridophyta (ferns and fern allies). Although the Eastern Highlands ( /- 30,000 km ) form only a small part of Zimbabwe (390,759 km ), they contain about 83% of all Pteridophyta taxa; about 67% of these occur in the Vumba ( /- 200 km ). Sub montane grasslands are open habitats, at all times exposed to weather influences. The ground is covered with grasses and herbaceous plants, trees or shrubs are hardly found. Which forms large clumps, Loudetia simplex. Common on poor soils and Themeda triandra. Found on better soils. Growing in the grassland are many species of Helychrysum. Several terrestrial orchids, aloes ( A. swynnertonii, A. rhodesiana. And occasional, isolated trees such as Cussonia spicata, Erythrina lysistemon.

Evergreen forests provide shady and moist areas with a closed canopy all year round. The forests in Eastern Zimbabwe can be divided into 12 types depending on the composition of their woody species; 8 of these are present in the Vumba. Wednesday, July 14, 2010. Planting at this time of year. I have been silennt for a while due to power failures, load shedding and Internet problems. Anyway in our part of the world these are the best things to do this month in your garden:. Sow root crops in July. Sow/plant hardy spring edible flowers such as borage and violas. Mulch beds. Harvest medicinal herbs and crops that are to be dried such as broad beans. Zap any weeds and pests that are still around. This weekend is the best time! A Herb a Day.

Tuesday, May 25, 2010. Herbal remedies for TB. This shows how important it is that we grow garlic, herbs and other natural foods in our gardens. Although we have a different climate to Europe many of the herbs mentioned below can be grown hee. Another very good source of natural antibiotic is honey - we may not grow it but the plants we do grow help the bees to make it. Tuberculosis (TB) is an illness related to the respiratory system. It can turn into a dangerous disease if proper care is not taken.

Tuesday, December 28, 2010. It is summer again! At last summer is with us although, like the rest of the world our weather has changed. It is cool and wet - meaning our vegetables are suffering - what was a good vegetable garden is now producing weather damaged crops! Anyway at least we have fresh and organically grown produce. The worst hit seem to be the marrows and squash - a pity as we love to eat them. Perhaps we will have a day of sun shortly! May 3, 2011 at 11:08 PM. What a great gardening!

Tuesday, December 15, 2009. A new addition to the garden. This is a new stapelia in our garden. It is Obea variegata. The very attractive flowers do not smell nearly as bad as the other varieties we have growing in our rockery. The plany originated in the cape region of South Africa.
