The Pines150th Birthday Celebrations. Recently I had the privilege of being invited to 150th celebration of The Pines which is just down the road from my place and which has the distinction of being Waipawa s oldest house. As part of the celebrations there was to be a parade, people were to dress up in colonial style costume, Devonshire teas, and strawberries and cream, homemade lemonade, and horse and cart rides. Once the photo taking was over we hurried down at the town hall to be part of the parade.

Walking down the hill from my place you have to go past 'The Pines' at the bottom of Rose Street. The Pines' is Waipawa's oldest surviving house being built in 1858. Out of kauri shipped to Napier and then brought down to Waipawa by bullock wagon. It has belonged to several people in its time but probably the best remembered is Dr Todd (with two d's). Abbottslee Tearooms are situated on the main road on the Northern end of town (34 Great North Road). I’m not sure why they are called ‘Tea rooms’ as that to me conjures up dainty little images of drinking cups of tea with maybe a scone with raspberry jam and cream on. But in my opinion, Abbottslee is more a ‘ Restaurant’. Than a ‘Tea Rooms’. Waipawa's Spring Festival blog. Saturday (This was changed from the first) in October Waipawa has its Spring Festival. This is really a country fair where a lot of the people from Waipawa and the neighbouring countryside turn up in town for a fun day of country stalls and activities. The event the Spring Festival has become really famous for over the years is the great " Waipawa Duck Race". Which is what " Pawa the Duck". Was originally made to advertise).
