Idols: we can get attached to objects, ideas, money, people, relationships, etc. These can become “idols” that we attribute too much power to. None of these are permanent, only our soul is. The pursuit of such things, if it becomes too much of a focus can slow down your spiritual growth. I saw an interesting description somewhere yesterday. Sorry I don’t have the site handy. The idea was that ego is a parasite and we (humans) are its host. Yuck? Do we open a door to trouble? And what does it mean, anyway?
