Kenmerkend zijn de harsachtige kleverige 'oliestrepen' die in dit hout voor kunnen komen. Het hout is hard, sterk en buitengewoon duurzaam. Walaba wordt met name gebruikt voor contrukties en zoals steigers en bruggen in de natte waterbouw. Het hout wordt echter maar mondjesmaat geexporteerd in relafief kleine afmetingen.
