flamingo rover: September 2013
http://flamingorover.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Monday, 30 September 2013. A Tale of Two Apple Cakes. Rafa has recently become happy to be in his pram - two weeks ago when we went out with him in it he just wailed ‘I’M ABANDONED, I’M ABANDONED,I’M ABANDONED! 8217; - not relaxing. It is lovely to carry him in his sling, but my back appreciates the break - so on Saturday morning with the weather still lovely in Edinburgh it was a pleasure to linger at the Cramond estuary after the husband did the parkrun. flamingo rover: The Cut-Outs
http://flamingorover.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-cut-outs.html
Wednesday, 30 July 2014. The Matisse exhibition in London has been tantalisingly near, yet far all summer. Yes it is only four and a half hours on the train from Edinburgh, yes I am on maternity leave and my time is my own. But somehow the no's have stacked up against it in my mind. After four and a bit months living out of suitcases home. Rover mum and Rafa at North Berwick, Scotland 2014. Henri Matisse The Cut-Outs. In the My Trash. Matisse, and his colours lure me around corners through the labyrinth ...

flamingo rover: December 2014
http://flamingorover.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Monday, 29 December 2014. A day can take you a lot of places, even when you don't really go anywhere at all. Today at the bus stop I was reading a library book my husband picked out for me. Love with a Chance of Drowning. Cover for Love with a Chance of Drowning. The grandmother asked me my sons name and when I told her she said: 'Raphael, we know Raphael don't we Katie.'. The grandma and I smiled over the coincidence of meeting in this way and agreed that we do indeed live in a village. After the scan w...

flamingo rover: The end of innocently ignorant hippo loving days
http://flamingorover.blogspot.com/2011/06/end-of-innocently-ignorant-hippo-loving.html
Friday, 10 June 2011. The end of innocently ignorant hippo loving days. On the first day out of town and on safari at the Lake Manyara National Park we see Hippos keeping themselves cool in fresh water pools. Only their stepping stone like backs and the tips of ears emerge from the water. Only it turns out that I have never given that much thought to what ‘hippo things’ might actually entail. It was not until day three of our safari that I discovered the dirty truth about the Hippopotamus. The first surp...

flamingo rover: Bath Time
http://flamingorover.blogspot.com/2015/03/bath-time.html
Wednesday, 25 March 2015. This pregnancy has seen me take many baths. Resting, with the weight taken off for a little while has been helping me get through my busy days. The bath was one of my pre-requisits when we were flat hunting: No bath = No deal. I enjoyed my first few chips and then I heard a cry that could only be Rafa's coming from the base of the stairwell. My son sounded like he was in considerable distress. I ate another chip – not enjoying it quite so much. The wailing got ...I did have all ...

flamingo rover: June 2015
http://flamingorover.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Monday, 15 June 2015. A large, impressive house. In May we welcomed baby Finn into our home. With our nuclear family up to four, and our post baby support team swelling the bodies in our two bedroom flat to six, I have been imagining what life might be like if we lived in a slightly larger house. In my imaginary mansion I would have a sewing room in a turret,. And a writing room in another turret. I would have at least one sound proofed room. I would have a cleaner. flamingo rover: Take a Walk
http://flamingorover.blogspot.com/2012/01/take-walk.html
Wednesday, 18 January 2012. While I was in Vancouver I took many walks:. To my various backpackers. To Rogers Arena- the home of the Canucks to watch the ice Hocky. To Granville Island to get tasty and pretty things. To go and see the twinkling Christmas 'Lights of Hope'. Rogers Arena- Home of the Canucks. Lights of Hope' St Pauls Hospital, Burrard Street Vancouver. The first sculpture I encountered was Dennis Oppenheim's. This eye catching piece was originally only a temporary installation as part of th...

flamingo rover: February 2015
http://flamingorover.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, 28 February 2015. My 18 month old son was exhibiting somewhat disturbing behavior the other day. After my initial surprise at his actions had worn off I realised that his behavior was of course entirely the fault of his parents. He is not in daycare, does not spend large chunks of time with anyone besides us, nor does he watch a lot of television. Rafa playing in the mud, February 2015, Edinburgh. When I howled with laughter at his passionate embrace he howled back in distress. Eventually I...

Thursday, 2 October 2014. The 'You Won't Remember This' Conversation. Having a child draws you into all sorts of new communities. Some days our little family: mum, dad and Rafa can be more than enough to handle; on other days gathering others around you is essential. Living on the other side of the world from the friends and family I gathered about me during the first thirty years of my life can make many things about being a parent challenging. Getting to know the neighbors, Edinburgh, Summer - 2014.
