Shutlingsloe | Walkies! with Barry Skellern
https://walkiesbarryskellern.wordpress.com/2010/06/20/shutlingsloe
From A to B and back to A. And some sheep. After a brief respite from perpetual sunburn I was determined to top up my tan and get a few miles under my belt this weekend. Mission accomplished: I’m now weary of leg and hopelessly sunburnt. Path through Macclesfield Forest. Across the moors to Shutlingsloe. The steep steps to the summit. The view from the summit is beautiful in all directions, and we were blessed with very clear conditions. From this point we could see Shining Tor to the north and Teggs...
Mow Cop | Walkies! with Barry Skellern

From A to B and back to A. And some sheep. Hi It’s been a while. How’ve you been? Last weekend Alke and I went out for a quick wander in and around Mow Cop, just south of Congleton. It’s an impressive sight from the surrounding plains, with what appears to be the ruins of a large medieval castle prominently visible on the top of a distant misty mountain. The princess is in another castle. No, that's the same castle. Panorama (complete with dodgy stitching). We were on the lookout for a rock formation lef...
Goyt Valley | Walkies! with Barry Skellern
https://walkiesbarryskellern.wordpress.com/2010/05/23/goyt-valley
From A to B and back to A. And some sheep. Our route initially took us along the western shore of the reservoir towards the supposed location of the ruins of Erwood Hall. Despite knowing that the ruins were there, and finding a signpost detailing the route to find them, we actually missed them completely. Total navigational failure. I put it down to the sun, which was frying my brain as we struck out uphill towards Shining Tor across steep open meadows with no shade to speak of. Ascent to Shining Tor.
High Spy and Maiden Moor | Walkies! with Barry Skellern
https://walkiesbarryskellern.wordpress.com/2010/05/01/high-spy-and-maiden-moor
From A to B and back to A. And some sheep. High Spy and Maiden Moor. On reflection, I’d rather my camera hadn’t broken for no reason during the course of this walk. The photos in this entry have been salvaged from the magenta-smeared, false-coloured blurred mess captured by my defunct Canon. Now I can spend hundreds of pounds on something I didn’t need to replace. The forecast was for heavy showers, but despite a grey sky the conditions were actually quite reasonable. Boots and waterproofs on, we tru...
Froggatt Edge | Walkies! with Barry Skellern
https://walkiesbarryskellern.wordpress.com/2010/06/06/froggatt-edge
From A to B and back to A. And some sheep. Another foray into the Peak District this weekend, to Froggatt Edge and the valley of the River Derwent below. The walk was supposed to be seven miles, but due to some particularly creative writing on the part of Roly “Poly” Smith, writer of the Rambler’s Guide book, we ended up making it closer to eight. West from Froggatt Edge. South along Froggatt Edge. As we rounded one outcrop of rock a sheep that had been resting in the shade leapt away, startled by our pr...

Walkies! with Barry Skellern | From A to B and back to A. And some sheep
From A to B and back to A. And some sheep. Ochil Hills – Dumyat. Bull;March 20, 2011 • 2 Comments. Hello, and thanks for stopping by. Trouble struck immediately though. It turns out that rusty legs are far less problematic than rusty map-reading, and within a few hundred yards of the car park we had got lost, finding ourselves in someone’s back garden, then wandering for half a mile in the wrong direction through steep fields inhabited by wary looking sheep. South from the top of Burnwarroch. Dumyat summ...
