Just another WordPress.com site. May 16, 2013. And one more photo. Outside with background security. May 16, 2013. May 16, 2013. Talking, not walking. So this blog is about the last two days. The only walking was the 5 minutes to Royal Oak tube station. But it’s about why we are here. What struck me most was the clam way everything was discussed and there was no political point scoring. Perhaps this was because I think the MP’s who were there were all from the Labour party. The reason we are in London is...

Goodbye London, Hullo Malta | Walking notes

https://walkingnotes.wordpress.com/2013/06/30/goodbye-london-hullo-malta

Just another WordPress.com site. June 30, 2013. Goodbye London, Hullo Malta. So here we are in the middle of the Mediterranean but getting here was not without its dramas – the car the NZ-UK link Foundation ordered to take us to Heathrow was an hour late arriving – fortunately we had allowed a good margin of error! We all went to the old capital city of Mdina – the old capital city of Malta. We walked around then had a glass of wine (both twins declined my offer of a beer) and a piece of chocol...Grace i...

At last a little walking | Walking notes

https://walkingnotes.wordpress.com/2013/07/05/at-last-a-little-walking

Just another WordPress.com site. July 5, 2013. At last a little walking. We are now in Villaz – a pleasant village 20 minutes and up in the hills away from Annecy. We are here on a house swap and the idea is to do some walking. The hills are about 1500 m – not so much mountains as big hills. Lunchtime we were tourists for an hour’s cruise on the lake- a smallish lake about 14km long and 2km or so wide. Lunch in true Kiwi fashion was our own sammies sitting in the park with crowds of people. You are comme...

A visit to Orokonui Sanctuary | Stepping out

https://julietlarkin.wordpress.com/2015/07/13/1119

Outdoor adventure pursuits, risk and writing. Books I’ve read. A visit to Orokonui Sanctuary. July 13, 2015. After a long break from blogging, and pressure from my 8-year-old son, who has his own blog, I am finally posting again! In Dunedin this week, down from New Plymouth, for the school holidays and just had a lovely walk at Orokonui Sanctuary. The highlight was seeing two Takahe foraging around in the undergrowth, totally unconcerned by the bright pufferjacket-wearing humans gawking at them. This wor...

Books I’ve read | Stepping out

https://julietlarkin.wordpress.com/books-ive-read

Outdoor adventure pursuits, risk and writing. Books I’ve read. Books I’ve read. Not that I’ve got much time for reading inbetween study and kids – but here’s a few of my favourite non-fiction reads in the last six months. Have just finished reading, Sex: The curious coupling of Science and Sex by Mary Roach. A most hilarious book about the history and development of sex research and science. Not often I have read a laugh-out-loud book that also explains really well weird and wonderful things about sex.

Outdoor adventure pursuits, risk and writing. Books I’ve read. Gathering time of year -blackberries, rosehips, apples. March 26, 2012. Blackberries, found in abundance around Invercargill. My blackberry and apple pie. On a recent trip to Queenstown I stocked up on rosehips, which I’ve made rosehip syrup with, though you’ve got to be careful picking them. I was still picking out prickles from my fingers days later. From → gathering. Larr; Doing the Dusky Track. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. How much outdoor...

Making the most of a cold dreary Invercargill day | Stepping out

Outdoor adventure pursuits, risk and writing. Books I’ve read. Making the most of a cold dreary Invercargill day. April 29, 2012. It seems there are not a lot of options of things to do on a grey drizzly day in Invercargill. Or maybe it’s just that it’s hard to get motivated to do stuff outside. I would be quite happy to sit inside and read my book, while the children make huts or play with lego. From → Uncategorized. Larr; I am gatherer – hear me roar! A visit to Orokonui Sanctuary →. How much outdoor activity with children is too much? | Stepping out

https://julietlarkin.wordpress.com/2012/04/02/how-much-outdoor-activity-with-children-is-too-much

Outdoor adventure pursuits, risk and writing. Books I’ve read. How much outdoor activity with children is too much? April 2, 2012. I quite like this blog post I read today about “slow parenting”. While raising active kids. Some good advice to heed, you don’t always have to be planning big outdoor trips to do with kids, although it is nice to do one every now and then. On the other hand, I saw this the other day and was in awe of what this mother, Trish Ellis Herr and her two children have achieved. You a...

Outdoor adventure pursuits, risk and writing. Books I’ve read. This is an online version of a presentation I did for my digital design class on May 3, 2010. It is about my initial research topic – where my water comes from and where it goes to – and how this relates to my blog, which is concerned with water issues in New Zealand. I’ve now changed my research topic to looking at the changing nature of outdoor adventure pursuits and risk. The audio recorded from my talk is here. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Below are the links to my posts containing podcasts done during August and September 2010 as part of my master’s research into the changing nature of outdoor adventure pursuits and ideas on risk. Early experiences in the outdoors, the importance of teamwork and kayaking with those you know and trust, close calls. Aspo and surfing and climbing. Dad’s climbing story:. And here is a post. Outdoor adventure pursuits, risk and writing. Books I’ve read. I am gatherer – hear me roar! April 5, 2012. Sorry to go on about blackberry picking, but I’m obviously addicted to it. I came across the best blackberry patch ever yesterday. It was so exciting – only for the blackberry picking connosieur I guess. I got 1.5kg of the finest looking and tasting blackberries, plus added a few apples and made blackberry jelly. You have to strain the berries through a cloth, which turned a very satisfying...You a...

The pleasures of gardening | Stepping out

https://julietlarkin.wordpress.com/2012/02/21/the-pleasures-of-gardening

Outdoor adventure pursuits, risk and writing. Books I’ve read. The pleasures of gardening. February 21, 2012. Enough of the courgettes. I’ve been loving my vegie garden this summer. It’s been a great growing season here with lots of dry warm weather but also bouts of rain. I never thought I’d ever be a committed gardener but it is an intensely pleasurable activity to see plants you’ve planted grow and then that smug satisfaction you get later when you can cook and eat them. Walking Austerlitz

Sunday, September 12, 2010. Summary of Walking Austerlitz. This was our first trip with Midas Battlefield Tours. For a short tour of only four days we managed to fit a great deal in. Again the weather was pretty dismal. However we regularly do hill walking in UK, so we are well used to walking in the rain. Mind in UK the mud was never quite as bad as it turned out to be at Austerlitz. The group was surprisingly cheerful, and remained so in pretty challenging conditions. This was used by both sides as a b...

Walking in SUNSHINE

Journaling my journey after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Thursday, November 25, 2010. Today is Thanksgiving. I have reflected all day long on what I'm thankful for, and I wanted to share a few of those things here. I am so thankful for the health I have at the moment. As I worked around the kitchen today, I couldn't help but remember the days that I was too weak or fatigued to do much of anything. My strength has returned and it feels good to feel normal again. Walking in the Valley

Walking in the Valley. Reflections of a Pastor. Saturday, June 13, 2015. On June 9th I began a new journey when it comes to my life. I had sleeve gastrectomy surgery and the outcome so far has been going quite well. This journey is not short-term, but life changing. I am reminded in the Scriptures found at 1 Corinthians chapter 6 verses 19 and 20 where we read, ". Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? Thursday, May 29, 2014. In one of the b...
