Walking Portugal and Spain One: The Coa

http://walkingportugalandspain.blogspot.com/2009/07/coa.html

Walking Portugal and Spain One. Saturday, July 25, 2009. The bridge over the river Coa is about a mile from Almeida. You go down a steep and curving road and cross the dry river bed of the Coa on a new road bridge. However a few hundred yards away is the original bridge, where Crauford almost lost the Light Division on that fateful morning of 24th July 1810. It was not a battle, only a Combat of the Coa. It could easily have resulted in the destruction of the famous Light Division. There was much...Like ...

Walking Portugal and Spain One. Tuesday, June 30, 2009. After an uneventful evening in Badajoz. We were excited at the prospect of visiting Albuera. I would have welcomed a guided. But this was not to be. The battle of Albuera which was fought on 5 May 1811 is not one I had studied in any great detaill. I was aware that it had been fought on the same day as Fuentes de. It is a short drive from Badajoz. Deployed his British, Portuguese and Spanish troops in the expectation that Soult. Our first stop was i...

Walking Portugal and Spain One: May 2009

http://walkingportugalandspain.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Walking Portugal and Spain One. Sunday, May 31, 2009. On Monday 21 October 1991 Jan and I arrived at Heathrow. Airport to join a Holts. Battlefield Tour of Portugal and Spain. It was more than 20 years since we had visited Waterloo, and I think some explanation might be in order. From 1970 to 1976 we lived in Western Germany, well placed you would think for visiting battlefields. In 1971 we had a very enjoyable visit to Waterloo, and came back determined to visit more. In 1991 I heard about Holts. Second...

Walking Portugal and Spain One: Salamanca

http://walkingportugalandspain.blogspot.com/2009/08/salamanca.html

Walking Portugal and Spain One. Saturday, August 8, 2009. Our first view of the battlefield was from just outside of Calvarassa. Jan and our guide Julia Page are well wrapped up, because it was a very cold morning. It would be difficult to find a better spot to view the battlefield. I like this map, because it is not cluttered and gives you a very clear idea of the battlefield. The Arapiles. Is 6 miles from the city of Salamanca. The Lesser and Greater Arapiles. The British. He is reputed to have sai...

Walking Napoleonic Battlefields: December 2010

http://walkingnapoleonicbattlefields.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 22 December 2010. Vobarno is a small and very attractive town in the mountains on the western side of Lake Garda. On 4 August 1796 it was the scene of desperate fighting as the retreating Austrians tried to capture the bridge over the river Chise. We spent a day visiting the town on 6 September 2000. Our visit is covered at. Http:/ napoleoninitaly.blogspot.com/. Labels: 08 - Napoleon in Italy. Tuesday, 14 December 2010. On 4 August Bonaparte was present in the castle which was held by 1000 men.

Walking Napoleonic Battlefields: April 2011

http://walkingnapoleonicbattlefields.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 26 April 2011. We followed the path beyond the buildings, eventually leading downhill to the small church overlooking the village of Augezd, an the site of the famous Satschen ponds. At the end of the battle the allied army retreated over the frozen ponds. Napoleon positioned a battery of artillery near this church and ordered it to fire on the ice. He claimed in his Bulletin that 20,000 allied troops had drowned here. Labels: 09 - Aspern and Austerlitz. Tuesday, 19 April 2011. We were fortunate...

Walking Napoleonic Battlefields: February 2011

http://walkingnapoleonicbattlefields.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 22 February 2011. We were delighted to discover that our hotel in Aspern was within 100 yards of the famous church, and only about a mile to Lobau Island. Our bikes were not ready when we arrived at the hotel, so we set off to explore Lobau Island on foot. It was a very hot afternoon, and we were quite warm and glowing by the time we arrived. Poor Jan did not know where to look. We drank our beer and left in haste. Labels: 09 - Aspern and Austerlitz. Wednesday, 16 February 2011. Our first visit ...

Tuesday, 3 May 2011. On our last day at Austerlitz we only had a few hours before we had to drive to Vienna and the flight back to UK. Just long enough to visit Schlapanitz. Its a short walk from the monument marking Napoleon's command post on Zuran Hill to the small town of Schlapanitz. Labels: 09 - Aspern and Austerlitz. Walking the Pyrenees: Ainhoa Redoubt and Bridge at Amotz

Wednesday, June 2, 2010. Ainhoa Redoubt and Bridge at Amotz. Sunday 30 June 1996. At last a dry, if cloudy, day. We decided to explore the area from the bridge at Amotz to the redoubts above the. This bridge spans the river Nivelle and carried the only lateral communications between the left and right sections of the French army. Today the bridge is closed to motor traffic and overgrown with grass and weeds. We followed the obvious road, but found it led us in the wrong direction. All were completely ove...

Walking the Pyrenees: The Bayonet Ridge

http://walkingpyrenees.blogspot.com/2010/06/bayonet-ridge.html

Wednesday, June 16, 2010. Tuesday 2 July 1996. Overcast skies yet again. We had planned to drive to Orthez, but the dismal weather decided us to postpone the 65 mile journey in the hope of better weather. Instead we decided to return to Vera and explore the Bayonet Ridge again. The ridge is dominated by a collection of duty free shops, with a large car park and plenty of places to eat and drink. The hill in the background is Le Grande Rhune. Despite our waterproofs we had to seek shelter in a small cave.

Walking the Pyrenees: Orthez

Friday, June 25, 2010. Wednesday 3 July 1996. It’s a 65 mile drive from Sare to Orthez, so we had postponed the visit until the weather improved. This morning we had a dry, if cloudy, sky and. As our holiday was nearing its end decided to go anyway. Fought on 27 February 1814 this was one of the last battles of the Peninsular War. Soult withdrew his main army from. And took up a defensive position at Orthez. This village was the centre of the early fighting, and helped us to get our bearings. We then mad...

Walking the Pyrenees: April 2010

http://walkingpyrenees.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Monday 24 June 1996. We woke to clear blue skies and studied our maps over breakfast outside the Gite. We could see from our map that there were a number of redoubts around Sare which formed part of Soult’s defensive positions. One in particular, Ste Barbe, seemed to be very close to the Gite. We decided to spend the day exploring the area and try to find the redoubt. We walked into Sare along this old cobbled Roman road. On further inspection this proved to be Ste Barbe redoubt.

http://walkingaspernausterlitz.blogspot.com/2011/04/augezd.html

Walking Aspern and Austerlitz. Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Augezd is a small village on the south east edge of the battlefield. It is famous as the site of the frozen Satschan pond, which feature in most descriptions of the battle. Our objective was to find the small church on the hill overlooking the village. The church is on a steep hill overlooking the village, and the area over which the allied army retreated at the end of the battle. The church is not easy to find. However when the ponds were drained s...
