Walking through stars in northern skies and northern Scotland

Introduction: The Constellation Journey. Map by Gill Russell. As creatures that walk upright, the heavens are half our visual field. The stars have inspired countless poems, guided sailors, been used to foretell the future. They have provoked us to devise technology for seeing and understanding what is out there, and even to travel amongst them. But they are ancient and their stories reach far beyond our own. Walking through stars in northern skies and northern Scotland: Glenuig: the leaping salmon and the nine hazel trees

http://walkingthroughstars.blogspot.com/2008/10/glenuig.html

Glenuig: the leaping salmon and the nine hazel trees. Our explorations had brought us full circle. We had collected Deneb, Vega, Kochab, Polaris, Aldhibain, Alderamin and Gamma Cassiopeia - our seven sparkling stars, a murmuration of stars. It was the 'Jumping Fish' conceived by Alexander Stewart from Ullapool High School that won the hearts of the selectors. The story goes that the young Finn studied under the druid and poet Finneces. Who had spent seven years trying to catch the salmon of knowledge.

Walking through stars in northern skies and northern Scotland: Skye

http://walkingthroughstars.blogspot.com/2008/10/skye.html

Over the sea to Skye, not on a boat but a bridge. The name ‘Skye’ is sometimes said to come from ‘sgiath’ or wing, and today I feel like I’m soaring, the hills around me peaking at odd angles. The road-bridge seems to tip and disorientate, gives me the sort of view I associate with aircraft. How the Bear Lost its Tail. With the fox as trickster. Intoxicated by story, we draw lines between stars in a map of the night sky, and make up our own stories. After that Scott took Henrietta by the tail and swung h...

Walking through stars in northern skies and northern Scotland: Kyleakin and Kyle of Lochalsh

http://walkingthroughstars.blogspot.com/2008/10/kyleakin-and-kyle-of-lochalsh.html

Kyleakin and Kyle of Lochalsh. Saucy Mary and the Chain. One day a Norwegian Princess called Saucy Mary moved into Castle Moil. She had blonde hair and was really strong. She also had a white dress and a blue and silver crown. Saucy looked rich but she wasn’t. This castle was dark, smelly and was filled with bats and rats. She hated it there but she had a lovely husband who cared for her and visited her all the time. Lots of money,’ she rubbed her hands together in delight. But what about the fishermen?

Walking through stars in northern skies and northern Scotland: Plockton

http://walkingthroughstars.blogspot.com/2008/10/plockton.html

From 1956, Scotland’s foremost Gaelic poet, Sorley Maclean, was Headmaster at Plockton High School. He worked tirelessly to improve the situation of the Gaelic language and was also a champion of shinty, a sporting tradition still proudly upheld in the school. He retired in 1972 to Braes on Skye, poetically tightening one of the lines we have thrown between our Highland stars. The next day we walked up the hill above the holiday crowd to where the road and railway line converge and the school sits, to me...

Linda Cracknell: Creative Writing - Creating Writers. I am a self-employed writer and teacher of creative writing. Specialities are short fiction and radio drama. Tuesday, November 22, 2011. Turning litter into literature? I've always been intrigued by the fragments of stories that you come across as scribbles on paper - a shopping list for a party; an unfinished love letter; a message passed surreptitiously from hand to hand during a boring meeting. So when I saw on the '26' writers' website. As for min...

Walking Through Sunshine

Thursday, 3 April 2014. A day to myself. Today I had the pleasure of wandering through Highpoint a well deserved day off work. My aim was to purchase some new boots, indulge in koko black and relax with a stroll through the shop lined halls. Luckily I stumbled across a fashion exhibition being held on the latest up and coming prints for the autumn winter season, something I took pleasure in watching as I was amazed by the brightly coloured compositions of clothing. Saturday, 15 February 2014. Recently I'...
