Nine Standards

The following is taken from "Stonechat". 15 "The Nine standards" are a series of dry stone cairns on a ridge, above Kirby Stephen, on the Cumbria/North Yorkshire border. Not surprisingly there are nine of them and the ridge is creatively named "Nine Standards Rigg". No one seems to know their purpose, yes it is a `border`, but why nine of them in around 100m? There are stories that they were built as tests/rights of passage or something for the sons of a farmer, but who knows?

In the 19th Century North Wales' slate quarries dominated world production. Several hundred quarries developed influencing the landscape and distribution and development of communities. All of the quarries employed their basic resource (over 90% of all they extracted was waste) to construct buildings and structures. To a certain extent the structures mirrored the quarries and in the larger and "mega-quarries" some of them are truly incredible. Thanks to Alun John Richards for permission to use this photo.

The Aran Islands are group of 3 islands off the Galway and Connemara coasts in Western Ireland. The largest Inis Mór (Inishmore) covers barely 12 square miles (7635 acres; 31 square kilometres)and together they total just over 11000 acres (just under 18 square miles). The view left is taken looking NE from O'Briens tower, the highest point of Inis Oírr (Inisheer), the smallest of the Aran Islands, immortalised in the opening sequences of Father Ted, which you can view on YouTube - Father Ted Opening.
