Thursday, 7 July 2011. This is the first year when the orchard meadow is getting close to our aim. Softer grasses leave space for flowering perennials and annuals. The trees planted last autumn are doing well - no doubt thanks to a wet and not too hot summer as well as much mulching. We will even have one plum, one pear and many peaches. This picturesque topography creates a variety of biotopes adapated to the different conditions of light and humidity. The alluvial areas near the river are rich and damp; they get flooded some years. The slopes are north facing but in most areas are gentle enough to receive plenty of sunshine. The plateaux is very dry in summer and has a thin layer of top soil. 1- No chemicals are to be used, none! No fertiliser, no pesticides, no herbicides. The more fertiliser the more dynamic plants are, particularly the thugs like nettles. Killing some plant species changes the balance and kills the animals who breed on it, you end up with a dull lawn instead of a species rich meadow. Well you can't let nature by itself, you will end up with impenetrable chaos otherwise so you need to keep it in check. Here is our timetable so far. December, January, February:. March, April, May:. Wednesday, 18 April 2012. Getting into a routine. The clearing that I weeded last summer twice is stunning ; it is a carpet of wildflowers: primroses, violets, euphorbias. A number of the magnificent marsh thistle have seeded and I cannot wait for their sculptural foliage to rise to 2 metres and bloom with their delicate flowers that attract an abundance of butterflies, especially the large peacocks, red admirals and a large brown butterfly. Success at last in the battle against nettle in the meadow....
