Als we niet aan het varen waren was er altijd wel wat anders te doen, aan boord of in de werkplaats. We moesten de belastingcenten toch nuttig besteden. Eén van de taken was dat je ingedeeld werd bij de Marinebrandweer. Op strategische plaatsen stonden kleine handkarren met blusmateriaal. Echt handig in het gebruik waren ze niet maar we hadden niet anders. Het pronkstuk was een echte Amerikaanse sirene, zo'n jankert.

Sinds enige tijd ben ik in het bezit van een varend model van de Wamandai. Om het in de staat van 1976 te brengen moest ze het dok in. De tuigage is vernieuwd, er is een andere vaarregelaar gekomen en de bedrading leek wel een bos spagetti. Met wat hulp van Fred van der Wal ( www.Fred-modelschepen.nl. Ontworpen en gebouwd. Het wapenschild van de WAMANDAI. Aangezien de bestemming Nederlands Nieuw Guinea was werd de WAMANDAI voorzien van een wapenschild wat paste bij die lokatie. Een tijdje geleden kwam ik in het bezit van een wapenschild van de Marinebasis Parera, op de achterkant staan een aantal namen en het jaartal 1974. Wie herkent de namen?

Mijn tijd op de Wamandai was erg prettig, dit kwam vooral door de mentaliteit van de gehele bemanning en de manier waarop Schipper van den Bergh met ons omging.
