Monday, 25 November 2013. Here are two photos of this last Sunday's visit to the Royal Northern College of Music String Day. New Viola Making :. The usual making practice is to shape the inner parts of the centre blocks, and fix the "C" ribs first. Then shape the other blocks and fit the remaining ribs. Most wood for one piece backs are not long enough to make one-piece bottom ribs as was the Old Italian preference. For this reason, and the high cost of highly figured maple ( nothing changes!

Thursday, 23 October 2014. This is picture of my latest violins . On the left is Guarneri model violin, 352 mm. back, and on the right is the little quarter size violin made for George Gower with a 281 mm back. The wood on the back of the larger violin is a piece of slab cut wood with a deep and very beautiful. This next violin is ready for varnishing, and should be ready for its new owner in about a month. Sunday, 21 September 2014. A recent commission was to make a small 15 inch ( 392 mm ) plus viola with a maximum short string length of 345 mm and a comfortable neck for a young player at a major British Conservatoire. This individual design was recently built and is now with its proud owner. As requested, the viola is double purfled with Clover leaf patterns on the back. It is my viola no. 111. Another, even smaller, commission is for George, here holding the wood for the back of his violin.

Please come along and ask any questions, try the instruments; I will have violins, violas and a cello. These Sundays are run by the Strad. Saturday, 17 January 2015. This is the back of the new violin with it's " antique" varnishing. This varnish has a soft lustre, retains much of the natural patina, and is not made shiny and over-polished. In the right light it shines and appears deep, transparent, and with very lively colour. The wood is deeply figured Romanian maple; I have a few more pieces available for any commissioned work. This violin should be finished next week. Please ask for any further details.
