penny-wise people: November 2009
http://pennywisepeople.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 30, 2009. I've come across several articles about the merits of "real vs. fake" Christmas trees recently. Thought I'd share some of the info for those of you who celebrate Christmas and are wondering which is better for the world - a live tree, or a boxed one. Number of real Christmas trees sold in the US in 2008 - 28.2 million. Number of artificial trees imported into the US in 2008 (mostly from China) - 8.9 million. That one made me laugh! When Christmas is over, we always lay the tree...

Thursday, October 29, 2009. It's time to plant the garlic! Here in New England, there are from what I understand 2 approaches when it comes to planting garlic. The first is to plant it in late Fall, once it's cooled down enough outside that the garlic won't start to sprout early (you want it to wait until Spring). The other is to hold off planting until Spring, and put the garlic in as soon as the ground is workable. We split the bulbs into their individual cloves. And cover the rows, as I've read that t...

penny-wise people: March 2010
http://pennywisepeople.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 29, 2010. But what about "local chains" (like Pet Quarters, which has locations only in NH and Maine). or what they call "locally owned franchises" - Ace Hardware comes to mind. Are these to be avoided, or are they ok alternatives when a truly local, independently owned, small business alternative isn't available? I haven't quite figured that out yet. I'd like to think that I can shop exclusively at independently owned, small local stores - but is that even possible any more? I like crocuse...

http://pennywisepeople.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, January 27, 2010. There have been lots of folks talking and writing lately about the fabulous little local shrimp that are available "fresh from the sea" in our area for just a few months each Winter. There's a shrimp CSF. Operating out of Seabrook, NH - there have been shrimp at the winter farmers' markets - and there's even a workshop coming up soon at UNH. That promises to teach folks how to properly cook and store the little treasures. Shrimp are everywhere this year! To cook them, we saut...

http://pennywisepeople.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 30, 2009. 2010 is right around the corner, and though I'm not really one to make a bunch of Resolutions, I do try each year to come up with a few goals for the New Year that help keep me focused on where I want to be heading. I also hope to finally pull everything together such that I can add chickens to our little world in 2010 - again, lots of work to be done first, building them a coop and a run so we can keep them safely in our yard and out of the neighbors' yards! Wednesday, Dece...

Sunday, June 27, 2010. Barrington open farm day. Today we headed to Barrington, NH for Open Farm Day. There's no way I can resist an opportunity to go and see alpacas! First we headed to Profile Alpacas. What a beautiful place! They had chickens strutting about -. And adorable Nigerian Dwarf Goats -. No - but trust me, it was a precious moment! Were more than happy to have their photo taken -. And one of them in particular, like the friendly llama at Profile, really liked having his head rubbed! The alpa...
