What is a cataract? June 29, 2016. A cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens inside the eye. The crystalline lens lies behind the iris and is responsible for helping to focus light onto the retina. Cataracts cause blur, decreased color perception, distortion, double vision, glare and halos.
