The oldest standing wood frame structure in West Virginia, the Peter Burr house is an eight-room, two-story log, beam and board building. The eight-acre complex is a rare example of a pre-1760 settlement period family homestead. The house construction inside and out is notable for its neatly finished exposed parts, wrought iron nails and chairboard joined together with wooden pins. The Appalachian Trail national headquarters is in a stone cabin on a main street corner. Harpers Cemetery offers both ancient gravesites and a spectacular view of the Shenandoah River. Harpers Ferry is a meeting place of winds and water, rocks and ranges.

The Potowmack Company periodically made plans to improve the Shenandoah River. In 1807 it completed the Shenandoah Canal, a 580-yard canal just above Virginius Island. Lift locks were erected at the lower end of this canal where the pulp mill ruins now stand. A bridge across the canal leads to Virginius Island which was once a thriving 19th century industrial town. After the flood of 1936, the worst recorded in Harpers Ferry, the last islanders fled never to return.
