The House History Man: June 2015

http://househistoryman.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

The House History Man. Saturday, June 06, 2015. The "Giant Tomato Can" House in Dupont Circle. The owner of the three 1887 built houses at 1640-1644 21. Street, NW in November of 1943 was William Wadsworth Wood, who initially had a plan to build a large circular shaped hotel behind the row of homes on R Street, NW. The house conversion and club cost an estimated $30,000. Wood was likely able to get the houses rather cheaply, especially the house formed out of the rear section of 1644 21. The transformati...

The House History Man: The Crazy 1920s Craze Known as the Krazy Kat Club

http://househistoryman.blogspot.com/2012/02/crazy-1920s-craze-known-as-krazy-kat.html

The House History Man. Friday, February 10, 2012. The Crazy 1920s Craze Known as the Krazy Kat Club. A bohemian club located just steps away from Thomas Circle in the teens and 1920s must have been an unusual sight to behold for those lucky enough to locate its entrance and know about its whereabouts during the era. It was located at what was then 3 Green Court, across from what is today’s Green Lantern gay bar, located in an old stable building in an alley just southeast of Thomas Circle. The strip was ...

The House History Man. Thursday, March 01, 2012. Mystery: Miss Manners Childhood Home in AU Park? 4826 Davenport Street, NW. I love it when a homeowner in Washington, DC contacts us to investigate if a rumor they heard from an old neighbor is really true. 8220;Anything is possible,” I replied, and we went to work. The first thing I investigated was to find out what her real name was, and approximately how old she was. Typed or hand written? It was to be constructed for an estimated cost of $6,000. Pichle...

The House History Man. Sunday, January 25, 2015. Hollywood Oscar Winner in Georgetown: The Myrna Loy House. 3522 P Street in May of 1968, Library of Congress. At the Georgetown Library. Where librarian extraordinaire Jerry McCoy informed me that it was once the home of Hollywood Actress and Oscar winner Myra Loy from 1950 to 1951. Now we had an interesting house history! The house at 3522 P Street, N.W. was constructed between 1821 and 1832 by George Mahoney, a bricklayer. She played mostly small roles u...

The House History Man: Dupont Circle's Nautical Buildings - Why there is a six foot anchor at Conn Ave & Q Street

http://househistoryman.blogspot.com/2014/12/dupont-circles-nautical-buildings-why.html

The House History Man. Monday, December 22, 2014. Dupont Circle's Nautical Buildings - Why there is a six foot anchor at Conn Ave and Q Street. The Anchorage at Conn Ave and Q Street, NW. While few pedestrians tend to look skyward during a brisk walk up Connecticut Avenue, those that do at the corner of Q Street are likely to spot a variety of architectural details with a nautical theme on what was originally two apartment buildings, the Anchorage at 1900 Q Street, and the Moorings at 1901 Q Street.

The House History Man. Wednesday, January 04, 2012. My Experience Publishing with The History Press. Since I initially began this blog in 2007-2008 to complain and warn others about Arcadia Publishing - from start to finish - I've received tons of emails from potential authors who have thanked me for the warning, or commiserated with their own experiences. I took a break to run the Dupont Main Street Program. Location: 2900 N Charles St, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD 21218, USA. I am so glad yo...

The House History Man. Wednesday, April 11, 2012. Your Old House Had Dead Bodies In It - Almost Guaranteed. Putting the Nail in the Coffin. Have an old house in Washington, DC? It’s most likely that you had a dead body resting in it for a few days. I’m not talking homicide here, but a funeral. In your living room. I just finished up a house history for a client near 20. Before embalming became commercially available around the turn of the twentieth century, funerals were obviously held soon after the dea...
