The Poetry Society was founded in 1909 to promote a ‘more general recognition and appreciation of poetry’. Since then, we have grown into one of Britain’s most dynamic arts organisations, representing British poetry both nationally and internationally. Each small act of generosity. After several hours on the cussed M6 I spent a beautifully hot August day at Hillmorton Locks in the excellent company of volunteer lock keepers Kevin and Taryn. I agreed that it should be a required viewing, maybe texted directly to anyone who rents a boat as part of the welcome package. The tips were great. You can always judge by the tomato. Anyway, I wrote this poem about the experience and it’s still a work in progress, but so’s everything, really. For Kevin and Taryn.

The Wind on the Downs. Thursday 2nd October is National Poetry Day, and the theme is ‘Remember’. In ‘The Wind on the Downs’ Marian Allen recalls their life before the war, especially the walks they used to take together along the canal towpath in Oxford. Since 1986 we have provided funding and technical support for over 700 drinking water projects in rural communities in 15 developing countries.
