Heel Counter and Lift. I strongly suggest reading all the way through the various directions to obtain a good understanding of the whole process before you begin. Also, please be aware that this is not how Roman shoes were constructed The goal is to have recognizably Roman shoes that will last a long time, and are reasonably easy to build. Plan to use a lot of exacto blades, as it is always better and easier to cut with a fresh sharp blade. I use barge. Area, this can provide some added comfort to the mo...

I would like to say from the outset that I owe a tremendous debt to the work of Carol van Driel-Murray for the knowledge to complete this project. This tent is based primarily on her article New Light on Old Tents published in the first issue of JRMES, 1990. The line drawings accompanying the article, drawn by Dr. Jaap Morel are also invaluable. That being said this is by no means a perfect reproduction of the Vindolanda tent. It is not leather, it is. Pyrotone is available from Dragonwing. Another issue...

Heel Counter and Lift. The most difficult aspect of hobnailing is the near total lack of a good Roman style cone headed nail. I have searched endlessly, and found very little. The occasional good cone head from days of old usually has too short a shaft for proper clenching, and usually exists in small quantities at best. A pretty good source seems to be Le Prevo Leathers. With a truncated cone headed nail available at a decent price. They are in the UK. I have found the Tremont Cut Nails. In Britain carr...

Unfortunately: It has been determined that at this time the Deepeeka Situla has too high a lead content in it to be considered food safe. I obtained my situla from Imperium Ancient Armory. In Los Angeles. I ordered it as soon as I saw it in the deepeeka website, though they did not require payment till it actually arrived. I have cooked once with it, over substantial heat for quite a long time, and it came through with flying colors. Height: 15 cm or 5 7/8 in. Opening of mouth: 12 1/2 cm or 4 7/8 in.

De-deepeeka-ing the deepeeka gladius. All the metal heavily before installing it. Hand guard carved down and decorated. Bone grip replaced with wood grip, which is a shorter length, and fits tightly. The sorter length fits my hand better, and left enough of the tang bolt sticking out the top of the pommel to allow placing a decorative brass nut (lamp nut). The locket plate was removed and the ring straps removed and discarded. The design is drilled.

Review: Deepeeka's Improved Patera. Unfortunately: It has been determined that at this time the Deepeeka Patera has too high a lead content in it to be considered food safe. I obtained my new deepeeka patera from Imperium Ancient Armory. The new patera from deepeeka a a vast improvement over it's predessesor. It is nearly as heavy a Tony Feldon patera I have, and has much thicker walls than the earlier sheet metal version. The bowl is heavily tinned, and you can see the wipe marks from the application.

Here is the back, and if you look closely, yo can see I under cut the sides, aand had to add material. I chose to copy the tabulum illustrated in Junkelmanns Legions of Augustus, copied by so many other Romans, because it looks cool. I always liked the look of the contrasting wool under, although I don't believe it is attested in the archeological record. I did modify the style of lettering slightly, to add some legibility.
