The streets around the four sides of the Square were taken up mainly by business buildings, but to some extent by residences. These buildings were generally of frame, two stories high, and this was true of the great majority of the buildings in the town, brick buildings being an exception. Tuesday, January 5, 2010. Centre Street east of the Square lead to Wilkes-Barre's burying ground. Purchased in 1772 for £9 10d, it extended from later day Washington Street to later day Canal Street to and from Centre Street half way to Union. The land fronting the north side of Centre Street was owned by John P. Schott and the south side by Putnam Catlin.
