My name is Renee Roederer, and I am an ordained Presbyterian (PCUSA) minister who lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I am a Community Chaplain. Writer, itinerant preacher and speaker, and an organizer of several new communities centered around spiritual formation and service. Westminster Church of Detroit. Stained Glass in the City. Light in Detroit — Stories from the City. May 25, 2015. I visit him at his senior residence, arriving as he finishes lunch so I won’t interrupt the afternoon nap that follows lunch. Asking his permission, I pull up a chair and sit at the table, keeping him company as he finishes eating the meat, potatoes and gray vegetable. What did you have for lunch? I ask him one day. LOK, he tells me. LOK what’s that? No Yes. It’s all I know how to d...Don sta...

Westminster Church of Detroit. Stained Glass in the City. Light in Detroit — Stories from the City. July 15, 2014. I think the kids will enjoy this, says the delightful mom who’s picking out the cross country team sweatshirts. What do you think? She’s right the kids are going to love it. They’ll think it’s hilarious, and I know I would, too, if I were them. The design is funny, but I gasp when I see it. Vanquish the weak. Hurdle the dead. Arrive triumphant. I know that place. Her blouse is dramatical...

Westminster Church of Detroit. Stained Glass in the City. Light in Detroit — Stories from the City. Stained Glass in the City. April 14, 2013. Stained glass inside and broken glass outside. The church I serve, Westminster Church of Detroit, lives at the crossroads of church beauty and urban blight. Our neighborhood is still nice, as people say, but surrounded by all the woes of Detroit. Our building is stunning, but too big for the congregation. It costs a fortune to heat, light and insure. My grocery st...

Westminster Church of Detroit. Stained Glass in the City. Light in Detroit — Stories from the City. Dear JP Morgan Chase,. May 23, 2014. Dear JP Morgan Chase. Big news this week, that you’re coming to Detroit to invest a hundred million dollars. Any money looks good right now, so people are excited. I know, I know, some people think it’s a PR stunt, after the mortgage mess. I heard one of your executives explain that you’ll be sending people here for a month at a time to work on Detroit’s issues. Or peop...

Westminster Church of Detroit. Stained Glass in the City. Light in Detroit — Stories from the City. The Murderer and Me. January 24, 2014. Most of my hospice patients were bricklayers and auto executives, teachers and truck drivers. But the murderer taught me something they couldn’t. A bleak nursing home is the most compassion he’ll get now. Could I just skip visiting the murderer, I wonder? Certainly none that I can deliver. Would he even if I didn’t visit? Maybe not, but I’ll know I chickened out.

Westminster Church of Detroit. Stained Glass in the City. Light in Detroit — Stories from the City. July 22, 2013. I came to love Detroit, in spite of the bathrooms. When you work in hospice or home care, driving around to visit people, you have to find your own. When I saw people as their hospice chaplain, I wasn’t a guest. I hated to impose the worry of a clean bathroom on already burdened people. So, fast food places, and libraries became familiar stopping places. Rev Mary Austin is pastor of Westmins...
