Tuesday, 30 June 2015. We boarded the Rocky Mountaineer this morning and set off at 7.45pm for Kamloops. The Rocky Mountaineer at Vancouver. Our train is comprised of 22 'pieces of equipment' as they call the assembly of carriages and other cars. It carried 665 passengers on this service with staff of 72. We were in a 'Gold Leaf' double deck carriage as seen in this photograph. Other carriages were of single level. A massive thunderstorm struck as Hn and I ate a Mexican meal in a local restaurant. Our fo...

a very grand pressigny: October 2014
http://averygrandpressigny.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
A very grand pressigny. October 22, 2014. Today is a BIG DAY for Nick. One of the main criteria when looking for a bigger house in France was that it had a garden big enough to require a sit-on mower! On Monday Nick cut the grass using the ancient heap of a petrol mower left behind for us by the previous owners. It was kind of them to leave it but it was hard work to use. After an hour of heaving the thing around Nick had sore wrists, a sore back and I had sore ears! More of the same Garden. As the conve...

a very grand pressigny: July 2014
http://averygrandpressigny.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
A very grand pressigny. July 25, 2014. TWO WEEKS TOO LATE. The next house we saw had nothing much to either recommend it or not. It was an ordinary bungalow in an ordinary suburb. There was nothing much wrong with it, nor anything very exciting about it. It’s the sort of bungalow my dad would like and that we might like ourselves when we’re much older and want a house that’s easy to look after and maintain. You could even walk to the shops for a baguette. It was just a few thousand euros above our price ...

A very grand pressigny. April 18, 2015. As soon as the kitchen floor was finished we moved back in amongst the dust and chaos to begin the next phase, which was to board over the remaining walls and fit plumbing, gas and an electricity supply, ready for the imminent arrival of the kitchen units from the UK. At last the delivery arrived but when the lorry driver started unloading the pallets containing our beautiful brand new Magnet units I had a feeling that something was wrong and my heart sank. Insuran...

Chez Charnizay: Spring Intermezzo
http://chezcharnizay.blogspot.com/2015/03/spring-intermezzo.html
Life in Sud Touraine. Sunday, 8 March 2015. A brief intermezzo before we post the second part of the Sculptures in Touraine exhibition. After seemingly endless grey skies and rain we've suddenly been given some super springtime weather and for the last 3 days the temperature outside has been hovering around the 18C mark. Glorious! A slight cut above the usual stuff on offer. Snowdrops on their way out, double daffs in bud. Early daffs by the drive. On Friday Niall dusted off the two chairs and table we h...

Chez Charnizay: March 2014
http://chezcharnizay.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Life in Sud Touraine. Thursday, 27 March 2014. The land we live on is old, and there is quite a lot of evidence of very early habitation. A farming friend has a substantial collection of flints which he has acquired by simply collecting them from his fields. The castle at Le Grand Pressigny houses an impressive museum of pre-history. At Abilly there's an archeological dig museum, Archéolab. Charnizay from the dolmen parking lot. The dolmen here at Charnizay is a simple one of three very large disc-like s...
