January 21, 2007 3:58 PM. I feel betrayed by John Currin. I went to his show, I enjoyed it, I gave it a positive review. Scanned from magazines from the 1970s. (Amusingly, such images, once fairly mainstream hardcore pornography, are now relegated to the "hairy" niche.). I spent a while trying to figure out why I felt betrayed by this. Clearly it's not because Currin used photos as a painting reference; I've reviewed painters who lean much more heavily on photos - Denis Peterson. And yet still I feel bet...

These are some of the images I was able to find in my folders. I had many from some years and few from others, as you can see. To me, making art is continuous renewal. Abstraction insists on invention, and when I feel one method getting tired I develop another one. That’s why you will see lots of change.

Notes on Art and Culture #5. Some who have read my essay on Jeff Koons think that I changed my mind about the quality of his work. I didn't. I changed my attitude toward it. I decided not to look at it as art because as art it isn't so good. However, It is perfectly OK as "fun objects", or whatever you may want to call it, so I figured why not see it that way?
