Basement Work

Previously, we had been using the the main part of the basement for storage. The entry way was for the washer/dryer. All the storage was moved to make way for a temporary workshop. It was a very dirty area, with nearly 100 years of dust. I didn't really have a plan for it, but I made one up as we went along. The pot life was 8 hours. Even with 2 fans and a respirator it was a horrid job. Pete applied the 2nd coat on Sunday morning.

Demolition

The black ceiling beams on the right were burned in a fire around 1949. very little of the burned wood was removed after the fire, they built around it. It must have happened before the previous owner (Maslow) in the Ambruster years, or possibly earlier. The other discovery was that the existing living room ceiling was framed with 3x4 lumber on the flat. The sheet rock was fastened to furring strips below. The whole mess has got to go, the beams are 20% burned. Then Al could start digging the basement.

Steel Beams

As we were digging the basement under the main house, and removing the foundation wall, a beam would have to take its place. For the time being, a temporary stud wall was installed to hold up the house. I decided that we could land the stair wall and the column on the same wall if I shifted the wall over an inch or two. This would make the column shorter, only 3 feet or so. 2 4 deep by 12-foot beams would replace an existing wood beam holding up the existing living room joists. The next was an 18 foo...

Rear Foyer Slab

Like all the other slabs in this house, tubing for radiant heat runs throughout. 6 mil plastic sheeting for a vapor barrier is above and below the 1 rigid insulation. The rebar is installed at 1 foot centers. For the pour, I took the day off. The cement truck was a little late. We stuck the chute right through the window. The mix was 3,000 psi with fibers, pea gravel, and super-P. It flowed in nicely. John floated the surface many times.
