The first settlers arrived in Jandowae in the 1860s, with the first caucasian child, Henry Bateman, being born in 1866. Few townships can lay claim to three different spellings of its name. The original name, Jindowie was initially named in a petition to the Secretary of Lands in 1862. The name was adopted from the aboriginal word for waterhole . The Dingo Barrier Fence - 'the longest fence in the world' - has its northern end near Jandowae. The fence is 5300 kilometres long and stretches to the Great Australian Bight. A display depicting the Dingo Barrier Fence is found in Jandowae opposite the Jandowae Community and Cultural Centre.
