What’s in here? Meet Tama, Your New Stationmaster. January 13, 2007. This is not a joke, people. This cat is really the new figurehead stationmaster at Wakayama station. There really aren’t that many employable Japanese youngsters out there. Anyway, congratulations to the cat for his new job. Of course, he probably doesn’t get a salary or benefits. Maybe just free meals and a place to sleep. Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window). Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window). My latest...

What’s in here? Cool Electropop Music Video Featuring 8-Bit Kimono Women. August 29, 2008. Check out this cool music video for a song called Yosawya-san by Japanese electropop group Omodaka from Far East Recordings. I like how the whole time, they make it look like the little kimono-clad 8-bit ladies with the shamisen are the ones playing the song. I posted another Omodaka video on Boing Boing. Let's Take The Scenic Route. April 20, 2015 · 11:14 pm. A Road Trip to Manchester. Road trips are the best, aren’t they? All the excitement of going somewhere new without the hassle of dealing with crowds, security check points and little kids kicking the back of your seat. Plus with road trips, getting there really is half the fun because of 90’s singalongs (is that just me? What the heck is in Manchester? Fun fact: Manchester is the home of the Orvis flyfishing chain. Must-see: The Hildene House. Spira...

What’s in here? Momoyo Torimitsu’s Radical Installations. February 20, 2007. This giant bunny (yes, it is taller than the ceiling) was part of NY-Japanese artist Momoyo Torimitsu’s 2000 exhibit called Somehow I don’t feel comfortable. I like it because she’s mocking the Japanese obsession with cuteness. I hate cuteness too. Picture of Horizons (2004) after the jump. Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window). http://tokyomango.com/tokyo_mango/2008/06/gachapin-and-mu.html
What’s in here? Gachapin and Mukku DS Cases. June 7, 2008. Last time I was in Japan, I bought these Gachapin and Mukku DS Lite cases at 2am in Roppongi. They’re awesomely beautiful shades of green and red, and for anyone who remembers watching NHK’s children’s programs in the 80s, they’re super nostalgic. Gachapin, a 5-year old dinosaur, and Mukku, a giant red Yeti (and Gachapin’s former secretary) were two of the main featured characters on. Which is the Japanese equivalent of Sesame Street. In 2008, Ch...
