Not Just A Pretty Face | weavewright
http://weavewright.com/2015/06/03/not-just-a-pretty-face
An ongoing discussion of one weaver's life…. Not Just A Pretty Face. June 3, 2015. Just because something is beautiful is no reason for it not to be a functional workhorse. What you’ll see below is a case in point. Those who own the predecessors of these lovelies swear by their ability to perform the expected duties of kitchen towels. To say that I’m pleased with these would be a gross understatement, so I’ll tell it straight — I’m over the moon. Newer post →. 6 thoughts on “ Not Just A Pretty Face.
All That Glitters | weavewright

An ongoing discussion of one weaver's life…. June 10, 2015. Introducing the new series of gooshy (that’s a technical term) scarves now in process on my loom. We begin with the yarns themselves. Next up, a section of the warp, now under tension, at the back of the loom. It’s easier here to see the arrangement of the threads. Newer post →. One thought on “ All That Glitters. July 15, 2015. Summertime | weavewright
http://weavewright.com/2015/07/31/summertime
An ongoing discussion of one weaver's life…. July 31, 2015. As the second (or is it the third? Heat wave of the year holds the Pacific Northwest in thrall, my work at the loom is proceeding nicely. It’s the summer Designer Towel series, appropriately named “In The Garden”. It began with a lively hand-dyed yarn from Blazing Shuttles, to which I added three accent yarns. Here’s how the set-up went:. Then came the slow and patient (and some not-so-patient) time spent at winding on this 10.5-yard warp. Anne-...

An ongoing discussion of one weaver's life…. May 5, 2015. The luxuriant colors and textures of my garden just now are breathtaking. Each year, the first week or two of May is when everything is at its lushest and loveliest. Proof positive. Those are all vignettes on or near the front entrance to the house. You may be able to see a color theme in play. Here’s more. Newer post →. One thought on “ Spring is Sprung. May 6, 2015. Ah, wouldn’t it be lovely to share a cup of tea in your lush surroundings! Portia's Cloth: Sheep Show 2016
http://portiascloth.blogspot.com/2016/07/sheep-show-2016.html
Tuesday, 19 July 2016. Here I am, back after a lengthy break, no dramas, it's just that time of the year when everything has to be kept under wraps. I sent 4 scarves to the Geelong scarf festival, but won't know what is happening with them until later in the year unless I make a trip there. I was very happy with these waves in a hand spun wool variegated yarn and fine wool weft in advancing twill. And the third version of the snakeskin, this time in coral. I'd seen a Burda. And finished up with this.
Portia's Cloth: December 2014
http://portiascloth.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 30 December 2014. Christmas tea towels 2014. I’ve done a little new weaving during the break but wanted to write about this year’s Christmas tea towels first. A few years ago I started making a run of tea towels for gifts and they seem to be a success because my friends now ask hopefully ‘will there be tea towels this year? I ended up with 14 towels, all a bit different, some with squares, some with rectangles and almost all with different colour combinations for the tabby and pattern weft.
Portia's Cloth: A little weaving and a little gardening
http://portiascloth.blogspot.com/2016/11/a-little-weaving-and-little-gardening.html
Monday, 28 November 2016. A little weaving and a little gardening. And showing more detail here. However it’s the last market for the year next Sunday, so I have reluctantly returned to the tea towels. I managed to do the first 3 with small squares. But I’ve moved on the other designs with longer blocks. And fewer colour changes. Earlier this year I replanted the garden bed at the top of my drive and included some kangaroo paws, called that, because they look like, you guessed it, kangaroo paws. Falling ...
Portia's Cloth: Something new – or maybe very old
http://portiascloth.blogspot.com/2016/10/something-new-or-maybe-very-old.html
Monday, 17 October 2016. Something new – or maybe very old. When I bought my Toika loom in 2006 in the last year of my weaving certificate course, it was advertised as having a a draw loom attachment. Sure enough it had 4 levers along the front of the castle and a couple of brackets on either side, just one lever and one bracket shown here. There were no instructions and despite emailing Toika and looking at various books, magazines and websites I could not find any explanations or anything similar.
Portia's Cloth: January 2014
http://portiascloth.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Monday, 20 January 2014. What sort of warp do you choose when the forecast is between 39ºC and 44ºC, that’s 102ºF to 111ºF if you’re still working in Fahrenheit, for the next 4 days? Were very cool. A local weaver who’s down-sizing had a studio sale late last year and something that moved from her stash to mine were a few cones of Cool Wool yarn, probably from the 1980s. I was inspired by a curtain in VÄV. Saturday, 11 January 2014. A Place to Start. Beautiful and intelligent. The only cloth she woul...
Portia's Cloth: September 2014
http://portiascloth.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Saturday, 13 September 2014. Not sure where the time went. So here they are, 2 were in a wool/acrylic/ viscose mix mostly green but with small amounts of lots of other colours, one of these went straight to my scarf collection. One was a plain violet 70/30 wool/soy fibre mix. The next was the same yarn but I was able to use up the remains of a few skeins in related colours. The last was a pure wool roving type yarn with long colour repeats. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. It’s...
Portia's Cloth: March 2014
http://portiascloth.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, 8 March 2014. A little bit of DIY. When I found myself with 2 naked looms last week, I knew it was time for a couple of do-it-yourself projects before I wound on the next warp. I went to the local hardware barn and bought 2.4m/8 ft of 30 x 30 mm quarter round dowel with a flat edge,. Some bolts and wing nuts, a packet of saddle clips(enough for 2 projects) and some short screws, short enough for the jobs I had in mind. Altogether it cost $24.48. It would have been nice to line them up with a fu...
Portia's Cloth: May 2014
http://portiascloth.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Monday, 12 May 2014. Sometimes I think the loom is smarter than I am. And I had the delusion that I would just finish the 4. I didn’t quite meet my aim of making 15 different tea towels but I did manage 14 tea towels and a bread cloth before I ran out of warp. Here are towels 6 to 14 and the bread cloth:. 6 had elongated crosses,. 7 just stripes,. 8 long rectangles,. 9 medium rectangles with squares within squares,. 10 squares within squares alternating with plain log cabin squares,. Ixchel Angora Bunny ...
Portia's Cloth: January 2015
http://portiascloth.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Monday, 19 January 2015. Just a little bit obsessive. So far I’ve found and woven a dyed cotton warp for glasses cases, they might look finished but still need to be lined. The painted tencel warp which was on my loom on January 1 is now finished, I'm very happy with the result but frustrated that I can’t seem to capture the sheen of the tencel in any of the photos. Even though it’s the middle of Summer, the weather hasn’t been really hot so I hope to get a some more done while the good weavi...The good ...

Saturday, December 17, 2011. Steady Work Is Good. The series of photos below shows the beginning of the "Merlot" scarves. A deep wine 100% bamboo, shown first on the cone, then measured out as a nine-yard warp on the warping board, enough for four scarves, each with a different weft and pattern. Related, but nowhere near identical - the story of my weaving life. Contrast that with this, the backside view of the "Summer Nights" series, now nearly finished:. Friday, December 9, 2011. An ongoing discussion of one weaver's life…. August 12, 2015. As we slog through another, shorter heat wave here in the Maritime Northwest, with cooler weather a day or two off, it’s a pleasure to lay low and enjoy the fruits of my labors on the loom. Not in the garden. If you’re interested in purchasing one of these, please contact me. The folks on the First Dibs list are choosing in sequence, but there will be at least four available when they’re done. July 31, 2015. As the second (or is it the third?
