The Garden at Oswegatchie School: Mother Nature Helps Out
http://thegardenatosw.blogspot.com/2015/07/mother-nature-helps-out.html
The Garden at Oswegatchie School. Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Mother Nature Helps Out. Peppers are starting to form! Mother Nature has been very generous with the rain so far this season. We haven't had to use the hose that often. Tonight we were contemplating running over and giving the Garden a drink when the skies opened up and dropped a quick inch and one half of rain down. It's nice to not have to schlep over there so often to water. Tomatoes enjoying the heat. The first of the cucumbers are popping out.

The Garden at Oswegatchie School: April 2014
http://thegardenatosw.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
The Garden at Oswegatchie School. Thursday, April 24, 2014. The weather was a questionable yesterday. It was cool and very rainy in the late morning/early afternoon. We hold Garden Club rain or shine but we prefer shine. We lucked out as the brisk breeze blew away the rain clouds and we were able to get outside and get to work. The children filled another bed with spinach and chard. These two crops are in the same family and grow well together. We estimate 90% germination rate in the pea beds. The childr...

The Garden at Oswegatchie School. Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Our vision for "The Garden" or why we grow the way we do. Our Vision for "The Garden". This garden project started as an idea to create an organic school garden where we could share our passion of gardening and healthy food with others and as a place to teach children where their food comes from. When we began this project last April, we wrote a mission so we could outline what we hoped to accomplish and list what goals we wished to obtain. Applyin...

The Garden at Oswegatchie School: Beneficials
http://thegardenatosw.blogspot.com/2015/05/beneficials.html
The Garden at Oswegatchie School. Sunday, May 31, 2015. Here are some of the beneficial insects taking up residence in our school garden. Assassin bugs use their long "beak" to pierce prey and inject it with lethal toxins that kill the insect within a few seconds. That same toxin will liquefy the insides of the prey which will then be drunk by the assassin bug. Ladybug or ladybird beetle. The warm weather we are having is finally making everything pop in the garden. Here are our latest progress shots.

The Garden at Oswegatchie School: Sense of Wonder
http://thegardenatosw.blogspot.com/2015/05/sense-of-wonder.html
The Garden at Oswegatchie School. Tuesday, May 12, 2015. She embodies the exact spirit we hope to infuse into our Garden project. Part of today's Garden club was inspired by her Draw Yourself Back to Nature art class Rob and I are taking online. Children were encouraged to go into the Garden and sketch what they were drawn to. Here are a few more examples. Sunflower planted last week just starting to sprout. Corn starting to sprout. Peas are now over 6 inches tall. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

The Garden at Oswegatchie School: September 2013
http://thegardenatosw.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
The Garden at Oswegatchie School. Sunday, September 29, 2013. So only after 29 days some of our lettuce is ready to harvest! I'm going to check with Dianne Houlihan in the school kitchen and see if she would like to start serving some. The tango salad mixes are coming along nicely as well. They seem to be a little slower growing. The radishes have also popped up nicely. Still waiting on the kale and beets. This garden project is teaching me patience. I know everything will grow in it's own time. Another ...

The Garden at Oswegatchie School: November 2014
http://thegardenatosw.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
The Garden at Oswegatchie School. Sunday, November 23, 2014. Now that the weather is turning colder, not too much is growing in the garden. Most of the vegetables have been harvest and the remaining flower heads have all been picked clean by the birds. The kale that was planted during the summer garden session is still growing strong and has a very hearty flavor thanks to the cold temperatures. With row covers we should be able to harvest kale long after the snow starts to fall. Construction of the garde...

The Garden at Oswegatchie School. Wednesday, July 23, 2014. 29 Pounds and Counting! 29 1/4 pounds harvested today! They got back into the routine pretty quickly and got right to work. The first thing children do when they get here in the morning is to walk around and observe any changes that may have occurred and explore the garden. Measuring the tallest sunflower (it is as tall as Mr. Terry). Soon we will have tomatoes, potatoes, corn, and spaghetti squash. Pulling garlic is hard work! I'm more comforta...

The Garden at Oswegatchie School: Dirty Hands, Happy Hearts
http://thegardenatosw.blogspot.com/2015/05/dirty-hands-happy-hearts.html
The Garden at Oswegatchie School. Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Dirty Hands, Happy Hearts. My Mom always used to say that you could tell how much fun you had by how dirty you were at the end of the day. If this week's Garden club is any indication, they all had a blast! Seedlings ready to go in. I love how this club is really starting to work like a team to get things done. They communicated really well with each other to get the tasks accomplished. After the snow delays this winter caused, we are finally bac...
