La Dolce Vita: A Blog While Abroad. Thursday, August 22, 2013. I woke up this morning at four o'clock after getting only a few hours of sleep. My adrenaline and excitement hid my exhaustion, because I was about to catch a 6:00am flight to Chicago. After 15 minutes of getting myself ready I hopped in the car with Dad and headed to the airport. He dropped me off and I was on my own. I took the elevator from the 18th floor to the main level. When I got outside I took a breath of fresh air. The last ...That ...

"Tú alfagra land mítt": February 2014
http://katiesivanich.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Tú alfagra land mítt". February 4, 2014. This Saturday marks six months of being in the Faroe's, meaning half of my exchange is over. A bittersweet feeling, but I am lucky to have as much time left as I do. I am hoping to depart for Minnesota on July 31st, allowing me to stay for all of the wonderful things the Faroese summer has to offer. If you are my friend on Facebook or any other social media, you will know that I have just been to ICELAND! Arizona Iced Tea in Iceland. I ended up coming back wit...

"Tú alfagra land mítt": July 2014

Tú alfagra land mítt". July 31, 2014. It's July 31st and I'm sitting in the same spot, right down to the chair, where I wrote my first blog post on August 10th of 2013 (Starbucks in the Copenhagen airport). The biggest goal of my exchange year has been fulfilled. It was light years harder to say goodbye to the Faroe Islands than it was to say goodbye to Minnesota. And then suddenly it was time to leave. It just can't be over yet. It can't just end, can it? I arrive in Minnesota at 7pm this evening, so th...

Fern•weh, noun, orig. German : a crave for travel; homesickness for a place you've never been. Tuesday, December 31, 2013. We wish you a merry swissmas. Merry Swissmas, everybody! At the Basel market. 1 Men cracking really, really long whips (my host mom told me to stand back.when they started swinging the whips around, slowly, they actually caught a few people's feet who were still walking to their places along the street). 5 THE BELL PROCESSION. I don't know how many people were a part of it, but t...

Fern•weh, noun, orig. German : a crave for travel; homesickness for a place you've never been. Tuesday, October 22, 2013. Also, hoi zämme. Hey there, my friends. It's been awhile. I'm hoping it's okay with you guys that I'm going to be an extremely. Irregular blogger. I remember in past years following the blogs of the other exchange students and seeing that many of them, after a month or two, either barely posted or gave up completely. "I'm just so busy! I got a wonderful care package from my family, in...

"Tú alfagra land mítt": 209 days down, 146 days left
http://katiesivanich.blogspot.com/2014/03/209-days-down-146-days-left.html
Tú alfagra land mítt". March 6, 2014. 209 days down, 146 days left. A little update for you - I moved to my third host family on Saturday. And I just found out it's March. It's March. I thought we were in the beginning of February. I am only required to keep track of the day of the week, not the exact date, so it really snuck up on me when I realized I would be switching families in just one week. Is the same. You can understand and speak so much. And, it won't stop here. I have at least four more mo...

"Tú alfagra land mítt": The Whale Culling
http://katiesivanich.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-whale-culling.html
Tú alfagra land mítt". March 8, 2014. I have been wanting to right a blog post about this for a long time. Many people from the states have asked me about the article circling the internet which talks about the "Denmark Dolphin Slaughter". . I have three corrections - the Faroe Islands is not. Denmark, they are short finned pilot whales,. And it is a culling, not. Is the animal that is referred to in many false articles regarding the culling. The short finned pilot whale. The meat harvested from the cull...

"Tú alfagra land mítt": October 2013

Tú alfagra land mítt". October 24, 2013. What does it mean to be a Nordic country? We were each given a packet with questions to answer at each exhibit, but it was all in Danish, so I was unable to participate. This blog post is how I justify not answering the questions. Luckily, those captions were in English as well. So I went around, read them all, and happily took in the aspects of "The Nordic". So, what is Nordic? This is what I found out. Nordic is about being cozy. Remember hugnaligt? There is a w...

La Dolce Vita: A Blog While Abroad. Monday, December 2, 2013. Three Months In / One Month Later. It's been about a month since my last post and a lot has been going on in my life here in Tivoli. The next two days we went to Jerusalem and toured the city at a sprinting pace with the sweetest guide ever. He showed the most amazing locations with the best views and even more amazing history. Our tour guide, who I would rather call a friend made the trip even more special for my mom and I, and it wou...Altho...
