Backyard blacksmithing in Pittsburgh. Monthly Archives: March 2011. March 26, 2011. A Day of Napkin Rings. I’m going to be doing some travelling soon, and I wanted to bring some gifts for my hosts. So, today, I made two pairs of napkin rings. Doing one prototype and then copying it for three more rings, I was able to improve and standardize my “freehand” design. With the prototype made, I measured three more lengths of stock (quarter inch) and put the spirals on all the ends. Not too bad for a day’...

Backyard blacksmithing in Pittsburgh. May 16, 2011. Finished the Paper Towel Holder. Yesterday, I took a few minutes to finish the paper towel holder, and today, I installed it. Cleaned up the drill holes, and wire brushed it clean. Then, I put on a little lacquer. After a day of drying, it was ready to go. And it works pretty well, too! Installation was a little tricky, since the bottom of the cupboard isn’t too thick. A little extra piece of wood took care of the issue. Posted in Fruits of the Forge.

Backyard blacksmithing in Pittsburgh. March 15, 2011. Last Year’s Resolution Complete. And only 11 weeks late (or so)…. I have finally fired up the torch, hauled out the anvil, and gotten down to business forging some steel. It felt great. The key breakthrough was realizing that my oxygen tank was a dud (empty). Fortunately, the folks at West Penn Laco. Gave me a fresh one without any trouble. Here are the fruits of that first day (got about 3 hours):. One of the spirals has been flattened, while the oth...

Backyard blacksmithing in Pittsburgh. January 17, 2011. Now that the anvil is mounted, the next thing I did is mount my vise. This is definitely a temporary solution, but given the mobile/outdoor nature of my shop, I needed something that could be moved around relatively easily. Plus, I wanted to get working! Because it’s a temporary solution, I didn’t bother putting lag feet in the bottom of the stump. January 10, 2011. Mounting the Nimba on a Stump. The basic design is to have two loops of chain with a...

Is an annual worldwide gathering of teams all dedicated to launching high-altitude balloons with various declared goals, from altitude to distance to photography and data collection. For the 2015 iteration of the event, I decided to try my hand at the numerous engineering challenges one may run into when attempting to put several pounds of electronics into near-space.
