Visting the Grey Lady | Woods Hole Science Aquarium

https://whaquarium.wordpress.com/2009/07/28/96

Woods Hole Science Aquarium. Visting the Grey Lady. July 28, 2009 at 2:25 pm Posted in Uncategorized. The wind was pretty intense on the island, too! Yesterday, we took a ferry to Nantucket. Not a wimpy slow ferry, but a high speed catamaran. The ride there and back was pretty fun. I don’t know how fast we were going, but it felt like 50 mph. When we stood outside, the wind and ocean water spraying in our faces was like a hurricane. It was intense. Run We went to the Maria Mitchell Association. An awesom...

Jack Updates Us on the Squid, Hangs with the Seals, and Tours the Cramer | Woods Hole Science Aquarium

https://whaquarium.wordpress.com/2009/07/30/119

Woods Hole Science Aquarium. Jack Updates Us on the Squid, Hangs with the Seals, and Tours the Cramer. July 30, 2009 at 3:15 pm Posted in Uncategorized. There are baby squid in here, I promise! Theyre just too small to really see. Two days ago the first of our four strands of squid eggs hatched. We didn’t count how many there were, but it looked like more than 50. We dropped in some thawed daphnia. Was kind enough to give us some plankton from their last tow, so we had something to feed the babies. As we...

Woods Hole Science Aquarium: RESOURCES

http://aquarium.nefsc.noaa.gov/resources.html

Aquarium staff and interns have written a few activity sheets. That can be answered by carefully viewing our animals and exhibits. Be aware, though, that the aquarium collection is constantly changing as animals grow old and new animals arrive. The collection will be at least a little different every time you visit. We try to focus our activity sheets on animals that are almost always in the aquarium, but occasionally a question might not be answerable on the day you visit. Sea Turtles in the Northeast.

Woods Hole Science Aquarium: TURTLE CONSERVATION

http://aquarium.nefsc.noaa.gov/turtles.html

Why we have turtles. The turtles get critical care at larger aquariums or facilities dedicated to turtle conservation. The WHSA provides follow-up care for turtles that need time to recover from their stranding. We usually release our turtles in August, nine months after they strand. The WHSA does not keep turtles for display. Since the WHSA began turtle rehabilitation in the 1990s, we helped care for 28 turtles: 14 Kemp’s ridleys, three greens, four loggerheads, seven diamondback terrapins.

Woods Hole Science Aquarium: WOODS HOLE SEALS

http://aquarium.nefsc.noaa.gov/whseals.html

Why we have seals. The aquarium provides a home for seals that are unable to survive in the wild. The WHSA seals can live long and healthy lives in an aquarium setting where they get medical and dental care and where they do not have to catch their own food or worry about predators. In 2008 we re-built our seal habitat. Harbor seals can dive up to 90 meters (300 feet), but they usually only go three meters (ten feet) below the surface. See photos of our Bumper and LuSeal, our two harbor seals.

Woods Hole Science Aquarium: COLLECTING WALKS

http://aquarium.nefsc.noaa.gov/collectingwalks.html

The aquarium offers public collecting walks at local beaches periodically during the summer. WHSA aquarists and interns serve as naturalists on the walks, teaching about life in salt marshes, demonstrating how to collect animals, and identifying the catch. Sometimes we bring animals back to the aquarium to add to our collection. More often we observe the animals briefly and then release them. Reservations may be made in person only. But they can be made anytime before the walk. Wednesday, July 20.
