David Short was born in 1969 and grew up in a small village in South Yorkshire about 12 miles from Sheffield City centre. His interest in photography only happened at the age of 20, while attending a general art and design course. Once the discovery had been made it became obvious that this was the path to follow. Gary Shrimpling is a Graphic Designer who lives on the outskirts of Durham City. He had his first taste of photography while studying design at university however it would be fifteen years later before he started taking it seriously. A self-taught photographer since 2005, Gary began shooting landscapes. Currently, he prefers the challenge of exploring the streets with his camera, capturing unexpected and surreal moments.

Christian howarth was born and raised in Bolton, Greater Manchester. He attended Manchester Metropolitan University and recently completed the Batchelor of Arts degree in Photography. He is currently living and working in Greater Manchester as a photographic assistant and continues to work on personal projects. I take pictures to gain a deeper understanding of the world around me. The camera gains me access to places that mere curiosity will not normally allow.

Welcome to the homepage of the 'What is England? Photography project. The project is taking place in 2010 and is curated by Stuart Pilkington. The 50 photographers mentioned either side are taking part in the project and each of them will be representing one of the 50 counties in England.
