That's What Redheads Are For: July 2010

http://www.whatredheadsarefor.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 26, 2010. We arrived in Bocas Town on Wednesday, July 14. Unfortunately, our luggage hadn’t even made it to Panama. Nevertheless, we dropped our carry-ons off at Hotel Olas and ventured out to explore Bocas Town. After returning from our final Bocas outing, Pete and I took in the island calm on the porch of our hotel. Venturing out to try one last restaurant among the many in town, we recounted all the wonderful experiences we had had and all the fun stories we could bring home with us.

Wednesday, August 18, 2010. On Being a Boston Resident Again. I alone am back where we began. I wonder if when my parents decided to build a family they knew it would disperse into an American diaspora, with pieces scattered across the Southern Tier, around the Great Lakes, and at times as far as California. We are individuals with our own paths who, for a brief period in time (in the grand scheme of things), formed a cohesive unit in a few select majestic cities and sleepy towns. We have multiple lives ...

Wednesday, October 13, 2010. Update on Education Reform. There's been a lot going on in the public-facing world of education reform lately. The documentary 'Waiting for "Superman"' has brought the issues of educational inequity and the impact of purported "school choice" back into the spotlight. Here are a few articles that provide some food for thought:. Lauded Harlem Schools Have Their Own Problems. NYTimes, October 13. NYTimes Op-Ed, October 11. Does School Choice Work? And also worth a look:.

Rambling on about nothing in particular, yet enlightening you nonetheless. We have multiple lives and inhabit them simultaneously. We cannot count the identities we enter and shed, apartments and villas rented and abandoned, whole houses with clothes left on hangers in closets.the records of where we docked, spent an afternoon or a decade. From Bubble to Broadway. Today we are eating potato chips. Today we are eating potato chips. Baked Lays for the Redhead and Dad. Sour cream and onion or salt and vinegar for me and Mom. Decisions, decisions! I think about eating some of each. Ouch I think I have met one of the five people my parents have mentioned. They are all colleagues in that foreign yet oddly familiar book- and brick-lined world of academia. Academia! Mr Popper’s Penguins. It is magical. I could dance among those stars all night...

From Bubble to Broadway. For kids that think it still exists. San Francisco is no New York. I tried to go to Walgreens yesterday after work and found out it closed at 6pm. Do you know of any Duane Reade that would ever close at such an obsequiously early hour? But who will go dancing amongst them with me, at midnight on a Saturday when there’s no one else around? Who will help me keep time with the hum of the city crickets? Have I told you about how I keep one ear open for identifying city crickets?

Fed Up: The National Campaign for a Strong Economy | Powered by the Center for Popular Democracy and Action For the Common Good

Powered by the Center for Popular Democracy. And Action for the Common Good. The Economy Still Isn't Working for Us. The truth about the economy is obvious to most of us: not enough jobs, not enough hours, and not enough pay particularly in communities of color and among young workers. Some members of the Federal Reserve think that the economy has recovered. They want to raise interest rates to slow down job growth and prevent wages from rising faster. That's a terrible idea. Our voices need to be heard.

What Red Read

Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Ever wanted Hemingway to judge your writing? I was being a general denizen of the interwebs, surfing around and whatnot when I came across a post about an app that judges your writing. It's called Hemingway Editor ( hemingwayapp.com. I'm writing this post first in the app and so far it's telling me that my sentences are all hard or very hard to read, and that I'm using a bunch of words that it thinks I could do better with. Also this is written at the 8th grade level. And that...
