Words Science. Animals. Is anyone still out there? It wasn’t a writing kind of year (and-a-half). It was a year of applications: six vet schools applied-to; four interviews offered; three interviews accepted (by me); TWO ACCEPTANCES; one waitlist; and finally, one big decision. I will be attending Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Starting at the end of August. Go Jumbos! Summer recap, fall anew. Hello, readers (all three of you),. Volunteering at PAWS remains very cool, though t...

Words Science. Animals. Happy new year to all, a bit belatedly. We’re well into second semester here at Tufts; winter persists; dogs are bored to death with short walks and terrified of the new bike trainer I installed in the living room. (Well, Oji is. Pooka is indifferent, given that it is not food.). Two exams until spring break. Wish me luck. Love to all. When all the vertebrae start looking the same. Begin again →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Words Science. Animals. No more free lunch. Hi, dear readers (all five of you). 8221; “What condition was it in? 8221;) Pooka and Oji got to stand five feet from two of ’em while they munched on crab apples a block from my childhood home. In the city. It was quite a scene. This isn’t the place (the town, or the space) that I would have gone out of my way to find, but it’s turning out to be just fine. Today was the first orientation day at school ( Tufts. More soon, I promise. 🙂 Patty went to tufts!

Words Science. Animals. The humidity may be high, but summer is done. School started this week, and it’s time to renew efforts to keep you apprised of my veterinary school mis/adventures. By the end of last year, I truly could not muster any excitement about becoming a veterinarian. There, I said it. I was so bogged down in studying, so burned out, so starved for any kind of positive reinforcement, that I had no reserve left of that feeling of, “This will all be worth it.”. In both places, I worked with ...

Gross Anatomy | jessica mintz

Words Science. Animals. My dear readers,. Had an index card on a music stand with four questions; we had two minutes to “identify this muscle (be specific)” and vomit out the information about muscle attachments (the places muscles stick to our bones), innervations, blood vessels, muscle actions and more that we have been cramming into our brains for weeks. Or, if you’re a late-starter like me, for one week. Among the stuff that get lost in the fray, in the pressure of the studying: this is information I...

Words Science. Animals. 8230;and you smell like one, too. Good morning, dear readers. I think there might be seven of you now. That is all I shall do to air the insecurities for now, though. Let me tell you what I *have* been doing, though it will have to be brief, since I really do need to get to studying biochemistry, or “p-chem,” as it’s colloquially known among vet students. Are crates where pigs can move and turn around “better” than other crates? Is 14 square feet enough? These are conversations I ...

Words Science. Animals. When all the vertebrae start looking the same. My dears, greetings from my desk, which is littered with flash cards, highlighters and pens, coffee mugs, printouts of canine joint drawings, miscellaneous bones and Halloween candy wrappers (oops). I’m still not where I’d like to be, and this is the cause of most of my vet school anxiety: How do I get from unprepared to prepared? How do I prioritize what material to really learn, versus that with which I may be just casually familiar?

Words Science. Animals. When I heard that the wonderful owner of Hound’s About, Pooka’s daycare, needed someone to foster a “returned” rescue dog who would otherwise be spending nights alone in the daycare building, I was in.
