Are Whats That Smell soaps. lye soaps? In a word yes. NO LYE = NO SOAP! You cannot have soap without the use of a caustic, or alkali base. We use a base of sodium hydroxide (lye) and a liquid, such as distilled water, rain water, milk, coffee, or aloe vera juice. The base reacts with the oils in a process called saponification, a technical name for making soap. You cannot make any form of soap without lye, not even commercial soap!
