What We Wore Then

What We Wore Then. Monday, June 22, 2015. All right, I'll confess- I found this book to be disappointing. Your Mileage May Vary, of course, depending on whether you are more interested in dance or fashion, for example. Balletomanes will find a lot to appreciate in Dance and Fashion. This leads me to my second niggle: Dance and Fashion. Mostly deals with dance in the form of High Art. (Mary Davis' essay on Tangomania is a notable exception.) And yet, dance also plays a major part in popular. This little g...

What We Wore Then: January 2013

http://whatweworethen.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

What We Wore Then. Wednesday, January 30, 2013. National Bellas Hess Amazing Midsummer Sale catalog, 1946. Pretty summer dresses in cotton and rayon from National Bellas Hess. Not much has changed, fashion-wise, since World War II ended a year earlier. And as you flick through the catalog you can see evidence of an economy still hiccuping as it struggles to get on a peacetime footing. A couple of pages have been overprinted with notices saying that the goods offered thereon were not available. 1960s casu...

What We Wore Then: April 2012

What We Wore Then. Monday, April 30, 2012. Butterick Home Catalog, 1971. Next to brown, purple appears to have been the most popular colour of the early 1970s. It predominates on the covers of at least one third of the pattern catalogues I own from that era. This example (another one of my acquisitions at "Love Vintage" fashion fair) dates from 1971. Sunday, April 29, 2012. Simplicity Pattern Book, Autumn/Winter 1969. I went to the "Love Vintage". That most typically 70s colour! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

What We Wore Then. Tuesday, February 12, 2013. Koch and Co., Fall and Winter 1892-3. Next up for my Menswear Month, a page from a late Victorian catalog that includes pretty much everything a 19th century gentleman would want to wear - except evening dress! Outfits include a "sack suit" (figure 2), the ancestor of the modern business suit, a "fancy English house coat" (figure 9), a "Bath Robe" (figure 10) and a "all wool tricot serge and velvet smoking jacket" (figure 11). Rate the Dress: a Doucet of 1905.

What We Wore Then: June 2012

http://whatweworethen.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

What We Wore Then. Tuesday, June 26, 2012. Style Pattern Book, Autumn-Winter 1982. It's a model wearing a pie-crust frill collar. It must be the early eighties! This particular form of neck-wear was a favourite of the young Princess Diana and it quickly made its way into the shops and onto the streets. Later in the decade the fashions would become less romantic and more assertive - and shoulder pads would grow, grow, grow. Wednesday, June 20, 2012. Koch and Co. Fashion Catalog, Fall and Winter 1892-3.

Jul 16th, 2012 at 3:18 PM. I've noticed a lot of old tv episodes where they fill in time searching for a working phone. 70s cop shows especially, on the 3rd reel. They could at least shake the phone and say no signal if they want to pull that old chesnut :). 1 comment Leave a comment.
