Your Way Back Home: Monsoon season in South Dakota
http://yourwaybackhome.blogspot.com/2008/06/monsoon-season-in-south-dakota.html
Wednesday, June 4, 2008. Monsoon season in South Dakota. Someone forgot to check the forecast. My folks are following me in their van, and I've got a tent; we have planned on camping all the way to North Carolina. It's June; I figure there's no problem. Even if we hit a summer storm, I'm a Pacific Northwest chick. A little moisture doesn't bother me. My heart sinks, and I shake my head. "Ah, that's alright, whattaya need? We've got dogs." I say, my voice trailing off. "How many? I could kiss him. Wine ta...

Your Way Back Home: June 2008

Tuesday, June 24, 2008. In which I find mangosteens and fireflies. I didn't fall off the edge of the continent. I haven't been eaten by the internship (yet). Time Warner and I just had different interpretations of what was meant by "The installer will be there between 1:00 and 5:00 on Saturday.". I now have 'net and all's right with the world. Major events of the past two weeks are as follows:. What I was NOT okay with was walking Kadin around the neighborhood (to get a feel for it, y'know? Three weeks o...

Your Way Back Home: Wine tasting in the FEMA zone
http://yourwaybackhome.blogspot.com/2008/06/phone-rings-at-900-pm-right-on-schedule.html
Sunday, June 1, 2008. Wine tasting in the FEMA zone. The phone rings at 9:00 pm, right on schedule. Rob's getting back into town after teaching another wine-tasting class in Portland. Why he drives down there every Sunday is more than I can fathom, but he says it pays well, and who am I to complain when I have an endless supply of leftover good wine, and a licensed sommelier to boot? I pour two glasses of muscat and we fall asleep watching Robot Chicken. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Your Way Back Home: Missouri fails to play nice
http://yourwaybackhome.blogspot.com/2008/06/missouri-fails-to-play-nice.html
Saturday, June 7, 2008. Missouri fails to play nice. I'm sitting in the parking lot of WalMart, which means the trip has sunk to a new low. Also, I hate Missouri. The last time I was here, I was meeting the family of my then-fiancé. Granted, the trip itself was fine, but everything that followed in the relationship left a bad taste in my mouth, and I've been viewing the Missouri leg of this trip with some trepidation. It's some sort of karmic superstition thing. You're on a summer road trip in Missouri w...

Your Way Back Home: The traveling side-show rolls on
http://yourwaybackhome.blogspot.com/2008/06/traveling-side-show-rolls-on.html
Sunday, June 8, 2008. The traveling side-show rolls on. I am no longer Taya. I have become my road-trip alter-ego, Stinky Girl. I put on my last clean traveling outfit two days ago, and have been sweating into it ever since. My shirt seems to be trying to return to its primordial soup-y roots; I think new life forms are developing somewhere in my vicinity. I'm fairly sure my skirt crawled away from me in the tent this morning. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). In which I find mangosteens and fireflies.

Your Way Back Home: New city scavenger hunt
http://yourwaybackhome.blogspot.com/2008/06/new-city-scavenger-hunt.html
Tuesday, June 10, 2008. New city scavenger hunt. I'm exploring home. Literally, this time, not some sort of metaphorical nonsense. We arrived in Charlotte early yesterday morning; we'd made it as far as Asheville. The night before. We came through the Smoky Mountains, which was a beautiful drive. I followed a car that I'm sure was Lola's. Cousin; it had bumper stickers for Obama. 08 and some little indie bookstore, and I felt like maybe I was going to do okay here. Problem if your two vehicles are a RAV.

Your Way Back Home: Cherry trees, country music
http://yourwaybackhome.blogspot.com/2008/06/cherry-trees-country-music.html
Monday, June 2, 2008. Cherry trees, country music. Seattle's brilliant unheard-of musicians. It seems only fitting to spend my last night here. Besides, I have to explain to the boys why I'm not married now. They were going to play the wedding, after all. Tom (Tom B., as opposed to Tom G. of the boat and the Ballard condo) asks what I want to hear; I ask for a moving-across-country, not-getting-married song. I get Greyhound Therapy:. I never said you tried to contain me. June 9, 2008 at 8:38 AM. Cherry t...

Your Way Back Home: May 2008
http://yourwaybackhome.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 31, 2008. T minus 52 hours and counting. Friday, May 30, 2008. I am dragged, screaming, into the 21st century. If you’re reading this, it’s because you want to. That’s my only consolation. So, here’s the blog. Stories about travel, which for me, always eventually seems to be about finding home. Granted, the travel may be to the other side of town, or home may turn out to be a small dirt road on a backwater sub-tropical island, but travel and home nonetheless. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
