New English | The Philosophical Traveler

https://whereschristy.com/index/new-english

I’ve learned a lot of English in Malaysia. Even when a friend here speaks to me in English, they often have different ways of expressing themselves, managing a conversation, asking a question, or saying yes and no. It’s not a different dialect of English, it’s a distinctly different style. This year my biggest communication barrier was not the difficulty of learning. As I had expected, but the difficulty of learning the cultural context and nuanced meanings behind Malaysian English. I interpret that to m...

The Cameron Highlands | The Philosophical Traveler

https://whereschristy.com/index/the-cameron-highlands

Last month I took a road trip with a teacher from another ETA’s school. She’s the self-proclaimed Kelantan ETA mom. She has us over for dinner, spoils us rotten with love and gifts and attention, and is always happy to lend a hand when we need help. She goes by the name, Ma. The Cameron Highlands are in the center of peninsular Malaysia. They’re in the state of Pahang, a long drive southwest from where I live in Kota Bharu. Ice cream, and car snacks along the way. We wind our way through a changing l...

Home in Malaysia | The Philosophical Traveler

https://whereschristy.com/index/home-in-malaysia

I live in teachers’ quarters at SMK Pak Badol, the secondary school where one of my roommates teaches. It’s an apartment inside the all-girls hostel where many of the students live. When I come home everyday, I drive through an iron gate and wave to the guard. I wind my way between the school buildings and wave to students waiting to be picked up after class. I wave to the hostel girls in track pants and. The cement steps lead me up to the first floor where the students live and where my apartment is.

Machiavelli in Malaysia | The Philosophical Traveler

https://whereschristy.com/index/machiavelli-in-malaysia

Most of my life I’ve been behind the desk, not at the white board. In Malaysia I’ve been learning how to teach and what it means to be a teacher. One day I had some particularly rowdy boys in the back of class who wouldn’t listen, were rude, and wouldn’t do their work. I walked into the English office, plopped down and said: HOW do I get ANYTHING through to the students if they don’t want to LISTEN? My wise teacher friends replied:. How completely Machiavellian. Whether or not. They will also be loyal if...

A Teapot on Every Table | The Philosophical Traveler

A Teapot on Every Table. While a cow and goat sacrifice festival (. Went on in Kelantan, I took a trip to Myanmar/Burma for a few days with a fellow Fulbright friend. Before I continue, let’s settle whether it’s Myanmar or Burma. Myanmar is the formal name used in written documents and Burma is the colloquial name. Burma was used during British colonial rule and is also the name of the ethnic majority, the. The busy streets of Yangon were lined by evening food carts and restaurants with little plastic st...

One Fulbright ETA's Journey in Malaysia. Ho Chi Minh City Part IV of IV. September 29, 2014. January 6, 2015. Half the reason I travel is to try the local food and Vietnam is a really good country for it. I came knowing I’d have to try at least one banh mi and one pho before leaving. I found an excellent blog. My list of foods eaten goes as follows:. 3 bahn mi, my favorite being the 2nd one, from 37 Ngyuen Trai Street. 1 bowl pho bo. 1 bowl bun cha Ha Noi. 1 bowl bun bo Hue. 1 bowl sour pho. One Fulbright ETA's Journey in Malaysia. Laos and Vietnam I. July 20, 2015. August 3, 2015. We only had a few short weeks, so we tried to cram in a lot to see as much as possible. Since I’ll be in the region for a little longer, I hope I can go back and revisit some of these places to really soak in the culture. In all, we saw Luang Prabang, Laos; Hanoi. And Ho Chi Minh City. Small, old colonial buildings in town, and more attractions outside the city. After a quick shower, we were off to the airport&#46...

One Fulbright ETA's Journey in Malaysia. Laos and Vietnam IV. August 3, 2015. August 3, 2015. I’ve already written a lot about Ho Chi Minh and most of the sites we saw were repeats of what I saw in September. So, read those other posts ( here. If you need a refresher. However, this time around we had a really cool guide named. Tiger, who pointed out a lot of things I missed the first time. Like the house that the French author Marguerite Duras immortalized in her memoir/novel L’amant. Pho from Pho Lê.

One Fulbright ETA's Journey in Malaysia. January 19, 2015. November 18, 2015. No words can really do justice to thousand year old structures, so I’ll let the pictures do the talking. We only went for one day, and saw the three main temples, Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm. However, it is a huge place, and you could easily spend several days there exploring the lesser known temples. Angkor Wat: clear blue skies and perfect reflection. Apsara dancers at Angkor Wat. Depiction of a Hindu legend. The day at th...

One Fulbright ETA's Journey in Malaysia. June 16, 2015. November 17, 2015. At this time last year I was missing flights. Getting over jet lag and trying to figure out my way around this crazy new environment. Now I feel pretty well adjusted here, and have come to love this place enough to stay for another few more months. I put off my flight home until the middle of October so this blog will remain in its current form for a while longer. June Roundup →. 2 thoughts on “ One Year Anniversary. You are comme...

One Fulbright ETA's Journey in Malaysia. Missing Flights and Getting There. June 15, 2014. November 17, 2015. Now I’ve just been sitting at the airport, eating Hi-Chews and trying to decide on how I want to approach the flight so I get there with minimal jet lag due to the time difference. When I take off, it will be about 3 PM (that’s 15:00! After these complications, it’s just about time to leave. Next stop whether I’m ready or not is Phnom Penh. An Abbreviated Packing List. One Fulbright ETA's Journey in Malaysia. July 11, 2015. November 17, 2015. Anyway, here’s how I spent June. Saw a contemporary dance performance at the National Museum. There were three dance troupes and the theme was memory of the Khmer Rouge, so the dances went from before, to during and after the Khmer Rouge. One of the dance troupes was made up of dancers with disabilities, including deafness, but you could hardly tell from the way they danced. Played in the Art Hawkins Great Canada Ultimate Game.
