I left the UK on February 8th and arrived in Hong Kong on the 9th. After Lunch with a fellow traveller I headed to Guilin in Guangxi Province, Mainland China. From Gulin it was a 90 minute car ride to Yangshuo which has expanded since 2006 when I last visited with my family. The scenery was very dramatic but I was less impressed by the lack of hot water! February 18th: Bike ride to Moon Hill. Another day passed and with still no information about when we would begin our teaching placements some of us decided to explore the surrounding countryside. 17th February: Lantern Festival. Climbing to Yangshuo Pagoda. Lantern Festival is the official end of the Chinese Spring Festival (New Year). There is a holiday and everybody celebrates and eats 'tangyuan' which are small sweet dough balls. The roundness symbolises togetherness and family. Children and adults set off fireworks and fire crackers throughout the day and into the night. (The photo at the top of the screen shows the hundreds of lanterns which were hung up in Yangshuo Park).
