Not all those who wander are lost. Friday, June 22, 2012. Bummin'it South, Part II. The second less complicated kind of Japanese merely requires the speaker to 1) know English and 2) be able to scream it. The rising decibel levels are always a sure-fire indication. It's as though we gaijin think that anyone born outside of our own boarders has been tragically afflicted by hearing loss, rather than than facing the fact that only about 5% of the world's population speaks English as a first language. The Hopeful Wanderer: April 2012

http://whistlestopnomad.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Not all those who wander are lost. Sunday, April 22, 2012. Once More into the Out(side World). As prefaced in my last post; the days leading up to the velvety release of those spring breezes are some of the toughest to endure all year, but when you finally catch that first hint of a year's forgotten season it very nearly reanimates the soul. Standing at the forefront of symbolism in this island nation, the Japanese Sakura. It's because the cherry blossoms fall. That they're beautiful in the eyes of all.

The Hopeful Wanderer: Trying to Stay Hinged in the Wait for Spring

http://whistlestopnomad.blogspot.com/2012/03/trying-to-stay-hinged-in-wait-for.html

Not all those who wander are lost. Wednesday, March 28, 2012. Trying to Stay Hinged in the Wait for Spring. Well this year my old bosom buddy, bringer of chlorophyll-infused motivation spikes, has hit a delay somewhere. Spring’s been held up, what gives? Leather boots, umbrella, bicycle, and a blizzard, having fun yet? Here's the bamboo forest near my house weathering the storm in an almost surreal way. The plaque next to these two tells a story about an old monk who has gathered mushrooms all his life&#...

The Hopeful Wanderer: May 2011

http://whistlestopnomad.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Not all those who wander are lost. Thursday, May 26, 2011. Shake, Shake, Shake. Have you ever seen a paint-shaker in action? Was nothing like a paint shaker. That is to say the comparison could only be drawn if instead of shaking paint you decided to shake landmines. It was catastrophic, it was violent, it was vertical, and I was 250 kilometers from the epicenter. God knows what it was like farther north. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I am, in fact, alive | Kurt in K-Stan

https://kurtinkstan.wordpress.com/2011/02/11/i-am-in-fact-alive

8230;because no one can spell Kyrgyzstan. I am, in fact, alive. So, I’ve been swamped the last couple of weeks, fully delving into the research aspect of my Fulbright. Thus far, I’ve collected and processed 1500 surveys from schools around Kyrgyzstan. I’m taking off next week to head to Talas, a region in northwestern Kyrgyzstan, to continue collecting surveys. It’s intensive work, but I’m really enjoying interacting with students all over the country. It helped that I was ambivalent to who won. You are ...

8230;because no one can spell Kyrgyzstan. Okay, so it’s not in the prettiest format. But here’s the data that I collected on my project. Everything is broken down into six pieces. 1) Language Use Survey (English). This is the English translation of the survey that I distributed to over 4000 6th and 7th graders across Kyrgyzstan. The survey was available in Kyrgyz and Russian. The students chose whether to take the survey in Kyrgyz or Russian. 2) Survey Demographic Results. 3) Language Ability Results.

8230;because no one can spell Kyrgyzstan. So, I’m overdue a long post about what it’s like to to my fieldwork here in Kyrgyzstan. And that should be rectified by the end of the week. But here’s what I’ve been sorting out the last few days:. I’d greatly appreciate it! Mar 20 spending the night in Philly (fairly late arrival, as I’m flying into JFK and then taking the train down). Mar 21 visiting UPenn. Mar 22 visiting UPenn. Mar 23 depart PHL 735am, arrive ORD 910am, visiting Northwestern. So, I’ve ...

8230;because no one can spell Kyrgyzstan. Thanks to all of you for being patient with me over the last month. After leaving India, I spent a week and a half checking out Oman and the UAE. Then it was back to the US for a whirlwind, two-week graduate school visit. I checked out six campuses in 11 days (and managed to make a side trip down to North Carolina to see friends and family). 8230;because no one can spell Kyrgyzstan. So, yeah, I kind of let the blog go after I figured out where I was going to grad school. My last couple of months in Kyrgyzstan were pretty much collecting and processing data and prepping for my move back to the States. I left Kyrgyzstan in the middle of June and spent a week and a half traveling around Latvia, Lithuania and Poland before flying back to the States on July 1. After six weeks of waiting tables (and trying to save some money! Date : August 18, 2011.

8230;because no one can spell Kyrgyzstan. I believe that, when traveling or living abroad, it is important to hold on to aspects and traditions from your own culture while immersing yourself in and attempting to understand the culture where you are. For that reason, if I’m able to, I try to celebrate the important American holidays when I’m abroad. So this weekend, we had Thanksgiving in Bishkek! But, you can’t have a traditional Thanksgiving meal without it, so I bought two 8 lb turkeys, stuck the...

8230;because no one can spell Kyrgyzstan. Research, Grad School and India, Oh My! Well, hello there, patient friends and readers. Admittedly, my truancy merits apology, but too many blog posts start off in just that form, so I’m just going to say HI! And hope that all is forgiven. Do you still love me? Because I still love you. A lot has gone down in the last month or so, so let me try to give you a comprehensive, but not too boring update on the wonderful world that I live in. Then there was the time th...

8230;because no one can spell Kyrgyzstan. I’m currently living in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on a Fulbright fellowship. I’ll be here for ten months, learning Russian and studying the nation’s language policies and how they affect its education system. Plus I’ll be eating tons of shashlik and meandering through as much of the country as I can! That sounds like so much fun…I am so jealous! Enjoy your time, take lots of pictures! My name is Lidia Nyiri and I work for http:/ www.travelgrove.com. It’s great t...
