Being a meditation on a Scottish Clan, a Wyoming Distance Race, and the Deeper Meanings Thereof. In the extreme northeast corner of Scotland, there is an area. For all this, the Gunn lands felt like home when I visited years ago. The story of the clan. From its Viking origins, to the gradual encroachment of its lands and rights at the hands of the Scottish kings, to the resulting conflicts with neighbo...

My name's Tom. I carry a whistle. Back to Tom's Main Site. Thursday, July 26, 2012. The first thing, here, is don't get too fussy about exact amounts of this or that. My recipes are more like guidelines, anyway. 10-15 Tomatillos. Cut into halves or thick slices (if they're big ones) and remove the stem cores. 2 Jalepeno peppers, stemmed and cut in half lengthwise. Don't remove the seeds and membranes. 2 Ancho peppers, stemmed and cut in strips lengthwise, so all outside surfaces. 2-4 cloves of garlic.

Whistling Badger Blog: January 2015
http://whistlingbadger2.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
My name's Tom. I carry a whistle. Back to Tom's Main Site. Thursday, January 22, 2015. One of my most treasured posessions is a set of hand and foot prints. Four years ago today, when we lost our son. Footprints are the perfect symbol for loss. The print itself is not an object, but a lack of one- an empty space left by something that was here, and is no longer here. Have, what I can. The other day I tried to literally count my blessings, you know, like that song we've all sung? Ever try to do that?

My name's Tom. I carry a whistle. Back to Tom's Main Site. Monday, January 24, 2011. His Name is David. His name is David. I only knew him for two and a half hours. And I miss him. He came over four months earlier than he should have. Mom was taxed beyond her physical limits, fighting a horrific combination of pain and infection from a burst appendix. Her body decided that it could not fight this battle and still continue to grow this child. And that was that. What would he have been? Rest easy, little b...

Whistling Badger Blog: And Now, Some Trail-Running Haiku.
http://whistlingbadger2.blogspot.com/2013/06/and-now-some-trail-running-haiku.html
My name's Tom. I carry a whistle. Back to Tom's Main Site. Saturday, June 15, 2013. And Now, Some Trail-Running Haiku. Stop counting the miles. Stop longing for the finish. Just enjoy the ride. Til I surprise some pronghorn. Humbled, but inspired. My memory is stirred: I wish. I could find the truck. Easy, light, smooth, fast. Just like Caballo Blanco. The first mile or so. I have seen elk run. Five miles through these same mountains. And not break a sweat. In triumph, I top the ridge. No past, no future,.

Whistling Badger Blog: The Big Turn-Off
http://whistlingbadger2.blogspot.com/2013/07/the-big-turn-off.html
My name's Tom. I carry a whistle. Back to Tom's Main Site. Wednesday, July 10, 2013. This is my first time online in over a week, and a rich and eventful week it has been: an explosive- and friend-filled Independence Day, huge PRs for Sarah and me in the 4th of July 5k. Somehow. Going off line isn't easy and perhaps isn't for everyone. Whatever. I'm off to the library to meet my wife and daughter for story time. As soon as I finish checking my email. Whistling Badger Blog: Why Jesus Did Not Have Pets
http://whistlingbadger2.blogspot.com/2014/07/why-jesus-did-not-have-pets.html
My name's Tom. I carry a whistle. Back to Tom's Main Site. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Why Jesus Did Not Have Pets. Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place to pray. I get up and go back inside to retrieve my Bible, which I have forgotten on the table. The Puppy is yipping, in that shrill, peel-paint-off-the-walls voice that can only be made by a puppy at 6:15 in the morning when the family is sleeping. I rush back outside and unta...
