This past week has been the most amazing experience ever! First off before last week, I was invited along with other young adults of the church to go and be a part of a tv show in which we were do discuss a topic and it will air tonight. When we are discussing I am referred to as Makena (meaning happy person) which is the name I was baptized with soon after arriving in Kenya and now all of Kenya, or those who watch the tv show will know me as such. This is a bit long and full of awesomeness. Our first bi...

This past week has been a rather trying time for me but things are going to get better I am sure of it. Thank all of you who were there in spirit and in prayer. All will b well. Not all of last week was a test, on the contra ire it turned out to be an exciting weekend. I got to travel to my host mom's home village in Taita, Wundanyi to be very specific and oh my Jesus Christ of Nazareth was that place absolutely gorgeous! In this little tour I learned something that I did not know before. Man I felt like...

Just like I hoped, prayed and knew it would be, all is well. Thank you all again who had me in your thoughts and prayers. The sun has decided to come out today for the first time in a while, well it tricked us and came out for a little bit yesterday. I have gotten soaked everyday since getting back from Taita except for Sato. These are some serious rains we are having here. It is times like this when I really miss my car! Carol is my car for those of you who were wondering. It lasted about two hours.

Got Trees? -

http://whitneyinthemotherland.weebly.com/1/post/2010/05/got-trees.html

The sun decided to come out for the rest of the week last week and has even been good this week so far. It does look like water from the sky (I don’t want to say the r word) is trying to come today. Not that that is such a bad thing, on the contraire it is very good but when it…you know…it really pours! It’s nice when it just comes at night when we don’t have to walk in it, it is needed and necessary and most importantly it makes for great lullabies. Thank you, thank you kindly. I just love trees, I just...

I wish I could write a more detailed report but alas time is of the essence and `I am taking off pretty soon. I guess the stories of Egypt will just have to wait until another time. Here is however a fever brief synopsis of the week in Egypt and the logging off of Kenya. Josh, Nicole and I all had a wonderful and very hot time in Egypt. It was an amazing trip and one I will never forget. On our way we had a ten hour layover in Addis Ababa Ethiopia so we took some time to see the city and from there Cairo.

The Kenyan Connection: Endangered Beauty

http://thekenyanconnection.blogspot.com/2010/05/endangered-beauty.html

Reflections of a Young Adult Volunteer in Kenya. Monday, May 31, 2010. 8220;I Scarce Can Take It In,” the line from that beautiful old hymn. I was especially overcome by it when I went on a field trip with my students to Hell’s Gate. And Mt Kenya National Parks. At the foot of Mt. Kenya was an educational center called the William Holden Wildlife Reserve. I was proud that this effort is in partnership with a center in the states founded by. The Kenyan Connection: March 2010

http://thekenyanconnection.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Reflections of a Young Adult Volunteer in Kenya. Monday, March 29, 2010. Hey all. Apologies for not writing this month. It's been kind of a whirlwind, mostly because of our competing in the National Drama Festivals. It's all coming together this week when we head to Kisumu (in the western part of the country) for the final competition. I've had a real blast co-directing. Below are some musings inspired by other YAV blogs- the brothers Josh (Kenya) and Tyler (India) Orem. I added to Josh's list. Kenyans d...

The Kenyan Connection: October 2009

http://thekenyanconnection.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Reflections of a Young Adult Volunteer in Kenya. Thursday, October 22, 2009. Taking Tea, Taking Time. I am on my third week of teaching English to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, or really whatever they need me to teach, at whatever time. I'm realizing it's the American way to have systems and schedules that are rather rigid, and that it's not that way everywhere. Great question. Deep too. Third lesson of the day: clarify each step- define, define, define. Well, no, but I'm trying to figure out when I'm suppo...

The Kenyan Connection: January 2010

http://thekenyanconnection.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Reflections of a Young Adult Volunteer in Kenya. Saturday, January 23, 2010. 8220;So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” –Jesus, Matt 6:34. I’ve told quite a few now about how I found my new favorite place in the whole wide world in Zanzibar. Knew that the island kind of forbade it, sort of an unspoken rule made by the flow of things there. And then there was my immediate future of going back into teaching: a profession I find extreme...

Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul, and sings the tune without words, and never stops at all.". Hope you are all doing well and are given the gift of time to enjoy the season. Reflections of a Young Adult Volunteer in Kenya. Wednesday, February 17, 2010. Up and Down Prayer Mountain. I was definitely apprehensive about hiking up a mountain with a bunch of children who were fasting and praying all day. I was imagining all the whining I would have done at that age had that been my task for the day. Strenuous exercise in the hot sun not eating all day? Whitney's Epic Return to the Motherland, Again

Whitney's Epic Return to the Motherland, Again. Monday, June 28, 2010. Friday, June 4, 2010. So that's why I'm here. It ain’t no secret that I’ve been going through a bit of a rough patch lately. Today as I actively dragged myself out of it to prevent my last month here from slipping away in a bad way, an initially unpleasant situation ultimately reminded me why I am here, and despite everything I’ve bee griping about, why I really do love the place. We entered her kitchen; she sat me down and started bo...
