What families are experiencing today is not an ordinary economic decline that is soon to reverse itself. According to the US Census Bureau, another 2.6 million people slipped into poverty in the United States last year, and the number of Americans living below the official poverty line, 46.2 million people, was the highest number in the 52 years the bureau has been publishing figures on it. According to the 2011 US Census, Lake County has a population of 706,222 and 57,910 are below the poverty level.
