Some confusion is caused by a reversing train. This was a grand tour of Europe via train: London - France - Switzerland - Solvenia - Croatia - Italy - Germany - Belgium - London. A short vignette of our epic 100-mile trip through the rural peak district and urban Manchester. A quick excursion to the Grand Canyon in a camper-van. Two weeks on a sunny island, featuring go-karting, foam parties, and other revelry as befitting some 20-somethings on holiday. Martyn and Gavin crashing boats in the Swedish style.

Faux-pretentious, moi?: We're off to see the ... er ...
http://faux-pretentious.blogspot.com/2007/07/were-off-to-see-er.html
Friday, July 06, 2007. We're off to see the . er . On Sunday morning I'm off to Jersey for four days. By the time I get back, my internet connection should be up and running again, so with any luck I'll be able to upload a few photos. (Might not be the Emerald City though.). In the meantime, I've a sangria party to host tonight and a friend's 40th tomorrow. If only the weather were as fab . Posted by Anthony at 15:28. Are you still around? Who writes this anyway? Anthony or Tony, you choose.
Faux-pretentious, moi?:
http://faux-pretentious.blogspot.com/2007/06/i-never-heard-so-musical-discord.html
Saturday, June 02, 2007. I never heard so musical a discord. Andy's comments to my previous post have put me in reflective mood with regards to the incongruities of the music heard in some operas when compared to their settings. To the best of my recollection, there is very little in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. To reinforce the Scottish locations, while Andy points out the unlikely pairing of Puccini's hyperlyrical style with a Western setting in La fanciulla des West. John Wayne it ain't. Is an Ita...
Faux-pretentious, moi?: October 2005
http://faux-pretentious.blogspot.com/2005_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 31, 2005. I'm back from Switzerland - not exactly what I'd call a holiday, though that's what it's down as at work - and plan to spend this week easing myself back into things. Again, don't be surprised if I don't post much on here for a little while . My mother and brother are doing remarkably well, but there's still a long way to go for us all. Posted by Anthony at 08:31. Thursday, October 20, 2005. Attempting to keep my thoughts elsewhere. From Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. It's likely to...
Faux-pretentious, moi?: One work completed ... (post 1 of 2)
http://faux-pretentious.blogspot.com/2007/10/one-work-completed-post-1-of-2.html
Tuesday, October 09, 2007. One work completed . (post 1 of 2). It was with mixed feelings that I completed Beati qui lugent. A piece intended to be for mourners what a Requiem mass is for the deceased, on what would have been my father's 65th birthday. We're even going to be performing part of it - the movement from which the work as a whole takes its name - at evensong on Sunday, 4th November, so that's something more to look forward to. I: O vos omnes. Collect for aid against all perils. The second bea...
Faux-pretentious, moi?: August 2005
http://faux-pretentious.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 31, 2005. Catching up, part I. Marcus left on Monday afternoon, by which stage I was coming down with tonsillitis. I managed to get an appointment at the doctor's for that very same day and the penicillin I'm taking is fast getting the upper hand, so now it's sheer laziness that prevents me from blogging, not to mention how much I've to say about the last five or so days. Little realising that I'd've hit the jackpot by mentioning The death of Klinghoffer. We started off with Spem. As ev...
Faux-pretentious, moi?: July 2005
http://faux-pretentious.blogspot.com/2005_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 30, 2005. Shades of Anna Russell? I was listening to Reneé Fleming's new CD, "Haunted heart", this morning; mostly jazz, at any rate very different from her usual repertoire. Her voice was unrecognisable the first time I heard it, and today I couldn't help but be reminded of Anna Russell's line about coloratura sopranos who, because no-one save other coloratura sopranos appreciate their art, end up singing . like this. I gave you my heart, and you made me miserablllllle .". Today my floor ...
Faux-pretentious, moi?: Notes on
http://faux-pretentious.blogspot.com/2007/06/notes-on-lucia-di-lammermoor.html
Friday, June 22, 2007. Notes on Lucia di Lammermoor. Andy asked me, a week or so ago, what the Scots make of Lucia. Highlighting the equally unlikely pairing of Puccini and the Wild West in La fanciulla del West. Well, it appears Walter Scott tended to play fast and loose with historical accuracy at the best of times, tending to prefer a highly romanticised view of Scotland, yet the librettist takes this even further. While Scott sets his novel The bride of Lammermoor. Of operatic mad scenes? A self-conf...
Faux-pretentious, moi?: May 2005
http://faux-pretentious.blogspot.com/2005_05_01_archive.html
Monday, May 30, 2005. A pretty quiet week. Chances are you'd worked that one out for yourselves, what with my not having posted anything on here recently - there's just not been a great deal going on. Put it this way, when the high point of the week is the arrival of a new manager for my floor at work, it's really not worth bothering about. Posted by Anthony at 20:04. Saturday, May 21, 2005. Another ride on the medical carousel. Don't get me wrong: It's inevitable that I too will end up on medication to ...
Faux-pretentious, moi?: April 2005
http://faux-pretentious.blogspot.com/2005_04_01_archive.html
Saturday, April 30, 2005. The ever-reliable unreliability of technology. I'd made an excellent start on a (typically lengthy) post last night when my browser closed down without any warning. I was in no mood to start all over again, so you'll have to wait till tonight to read all about the wonders of a day off (yesterday) after all the never-ending activity of Thursday . That said, I'll be writing the post off-line! Posted by Anthony at 08:37. Tuesday, April 26, 2005. With all the main parties vying for ...
Faux-pretentious, moi?: December 2005
http://faux-pretentious.blogspot.com/2005_12_01_archive.html
Friday, December 30, 2005. Review of the year. To say 2005 has been a year of highs and lows would be putting it mildly. On the work front, August alone ranged from the joys of discussing Festival productions with customers to the sense of betrayal I felt at not being permitted the time off to attend rehearsals for Dido and Aeneas. It's a new era for us as a family, no doubting that. Here's hoping it's reflected elsewhere . A Happy New Year to you all. Posted by Anthony at 22:00. A 3-hour dramatisation o...
