Archive for January 2014. Friday, January 10, 2014. Shoveling snow is one of those chores that reminds me that I’m a widow. Actually, it reminds me that I’m a widow who doesn’t own a snow blower. The driveway at our old house. So let me tell you about the strong women:. My great-grandmother, my grandmother (holding doll) and my great-aunt. This is one of only two photos that exist of my grandmother before she was blinded. My great-grandmother on my dad’s side was a Cherokee woman who I’m told...My father...
The Piercing: Or How a Needle Through the Nose is Like an Arrow To My Heart | A Widow's Apprenticeship
http://www.widowsapprenticeship.blogspot.com/2014/10/the-piercing-or-how-needle-through-nose.html
The Piercing: Or How a Needle Through the Nose is Like an Arrow To My Heart. Sunday, October 5, 2014. Last week was my daughter’s 17. For her birthday, my daughter wanted to have her nose pierced. A few of her friends have small gems on their noses, and she thought this would be a way of setting herself apart. She’s a pretty quiet young woman, and I think small ways of declaring her independence and individuality are important to her. Cancer Poetry Project: My Poem. Niagra Falls, 2009.

February 2015 | A Widow's Apprenticeship
http://www.widowsapprenticeship.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Archive for February 2015. Saturday, February 7, 2015. I remember the second or maybe third time I went out with Kevin. We ended up at his apartment, with a bag of Fritos and a six-pack of Stroh’s Signature beer. We had both attended college classes that day, then worked an eight-hour shift at the Hyatt hotel. It was closing in on midnight and I had a class the next day at 8 am. I’ve considered the impossible-to-change regrets lately as I read Atul Gawande’s book, Being Mortal. So I didn’t. Cancer Poetry...
Reading My Way Through: How CS Lewis and I Will Never Again be Bipeds | A Widow's Apprenticeship
http://www.widowsapprenticeship.blogspot.com/2014/08/reading-my-way-through-how-cs-lewis-and.html
Reading My Way Through: How CS Lewis and I Will Never Again be Bipeds. Monday, August 25, 2014. As I near the fourth anniversary of Kevin’s passing, I’m revisiting C.S. Lewis’ A Grief Observed. It has been helpful to have Lewis’ thoughts with me as I travel, and to read them again from a different place than when last I picked up this little book. It is quite an understatement, perhaps, to say that grief is just a part of my life now. 8220;No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear. I am not af...

Life with Charley - And Down Syndrome: January 2015
http://lifewithcharley.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
The Preacher Takes a Wife. Tuesday, January 27, 2015. A Circle Unbroken - A Special Olympics Post. When I saw this on Facebook today, I thought immediately of Special Olympics. Sad to say, but few of us in this world understand this message. But happy to say, Special Olympians do. There's a group of special needs students from Knoxville at Ober Gatlinburg right this very minute. They may not be sitting in a circle with their feet together, but their arms are around their buddies. The last time I saw Char...
Life with Charley - And Down Syndrome: July 2015
http://lifewithcharley.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
The Preacher Takes a Wife. Friday, July 17, 2015. This may look like the face of an innocent, but I assure you, it is not. No, this is the face of someone who did his level best to talk me out of the electric cart I was using in Walmart. Owww, my foot hurt," he said, hobbling along beside my cart. His foot was not hurting. Ooooo, hurtin' me in my side," he wailed. Nice try. Nothing wrong with his side either. He had to be somewhere, but where? Did you think I sent you to get that cart so you could take a...
Life with Charley - And Down Syndrome: April 2015
http://lifewithcharley.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
The Preacher Takes a Wife. Wednesday, April 22, 2015. It's Prom time. That coming of age rite of passage, where the stars shine on those decked out like princes and princesses. Its a night of hopes and dreams. A night of formals, hairdos, tuxedos corsages and bling. We all know that prayer. It's silent, yet so loud it screams. It's also a time to breathe. That bottomless exhale when the look on your kid's face says there's an invitation on the other end of the phone. How many proms does one guy need?
