From the French Impressionists to Rothko. THE EFFECT OF GLAZES. The use of colour in modern painting to express human emotions – from Henri Matisse, who explored the concept where colour is owned entirely by the painting and not by the subjects represented in the painting, to examples in pure abstract art, like Mark Rothko who removed objects entirely and used structure only as a framework through which we allow colour to work its magic on us. The top of our stairs (Oil on Linen, 100×80). June 17, 2015.

This content is 2015 Lexi Jones reserved. GP said to peer at it through your art goggles and if it disappears then it isn't art. I tried this approach here and it appears to me as vivid as the day is long, but should I know why? Ambiguity seems pretty central to what art is, I think this is true. Owen Wigham. Maybe Pope Sixtus IV and Pope Julius II built the new church then Michelangelo came along later to add a bit of decoration to the ceiling? The Higgs Boson is so well defined that scientists wait for...

The Other English Lion » Towler Bell
http://william.gallerywithoutwalls.org/portfolio_1349969562/the-other-english-lion
The Other English Lion. In the red corner we have the old cockney geezer JMW Turner, and in the blue, the country boy John Constable. Turner: watery contrasts and obsessive preoccupation with light. Constable: structurally energised, essentially ‘composite’ view of nature. I have always been intrigued by the well documented rivalry between these two lions as they grew obviously more expressionistic together as ageing RA’s! The timeline of Turner’s transformation from the dullness of ‘Richmond...View of S...

Verticals and Horizontals – Lexi Jones

This content is 2015 Lexi Jones reserved. On the surface it's very natural to judge this stuff as frivolous and decorative - and what's wrong with that I hear you cry! But when this forms part of an artist's core view on everything, it's very difficult not to judge it as pure gimmickry - even in the case of Stanley Spencer and Lowery, dare I say it! Might it be advisable for artists to apply this model in their art; not too ridiculously analytical I hope!
